Best way to play these games with pre-rendered backgrounds still remains rendering at higher resolution then scaling back down to native (i.e. SSAA).

Ignore the shitty CRT shader if you can. The point is, this method improves 3D models without resulting in the models sticking out like a sore thumb over the backgrounds.

You can do it in standalone Duckstation or using either the Swanstation or Beetle PSX HW cores on RetroArch.

On Duckstation, under Enhancement Settings, simply set it to a higher internal res (4x or higher is good), then go to Display Settings, and set Downsampling to Box. I have it set here to 8x internal res, which is probably overkill. If you want to mix it with a CRT shader, however, you'll have to use RetroArch.
