What is the best way to play this on PC currently? I've heard Project 64 being mentioned, but are there any good FPS increase patches and reshaders /vr/ would recommend? Also any recs on controller re-mapping, I want to do what I can to avoid hating it the first time through.

Buy a usb N64 controller or a converter for a real one because Zorlda is not optimised for a dualshock unless you’re dying to map the c buttons to the right stick. The game runs fine and pushing itself fps is just going to fuck up cycles and look weird. It runs well as it is. There’s a HD texture pack if you want to use it but it just clashes with the rest of aesthetic and looks overall quite ugly

If you insist on using dualshock/xbox controller then this is the closest you can get to what Nintendo used on the GCN

A = X/A
B = O/B
C left = Square/X
C right = Triangle/Y
C down = R1/Right bumper
L = L2/Left trigger
R = R2/Right trigger
Z = L1/Left bumper
C up = Select
Start = Start

You'll probably murder someone when you start to do the ocarina songs but during normal gameplay it should be fine.

there are HD patches,but fps patches sadly break the game,so you constantly need to turn them on and off,but its currently being reverse engineered so that project may be more fruitful if you don't want 20 fps (which kinda feels like shit).

though the 3ds version runs at a locked 30 afaik,but its the same issue when going above 30,though you meed to get a patch cause the 3ds version sucks anyways.

Use Patcher64 Tool or whatever it’s called (Google it, there’s a GitHub) and enable the Redux patch and QoL shit like faster text, faster block pushing, boots and ocarina on the D-Pad, fixed translation, etc. Don’t bother with anything else.

I think some emulators allow you to have more than one mapping at once, so you can use the C-stick for ocarina playing and still use regular buttons for items.

Whatever you do, stay away from "HD texture" mods or whatever. Almost all of them are tasteless as fuck and ruin the game's art direction and atmosphere. I know it's ultimately subjective, but the only one I can remotely stomach looking at is the cel-shaded one, only because it's at least kind of unique.

The game does work relatively well with widescreen hacks, though, so give it a try using the GLideN64 plugin (NOT Glide64 - that's an older plugin). You can crank up MSAA as well.

Really man, OoT loves to crash even with Angryliondildo5.7 or whatever Project64 is at now, but I assure you it has not made the game more stable. Nintendo wins for now and yes, the emulation for OoT on Wii is far better than it is on the Switch.

I don't know, the aftermarket for retro games is just not worth my time so I haven't checked. What I do know is that an everdrive is worth it so you can have all the N64 games you want on one cartridge and it running on real hardware flawlessly, plus you can play improvement patches like OOT Redux. Like even if you only wanted "the good ones" from the N64 library it would still be cheaper to get an everdrive than buy all five of them.

Surprising since it's notorious for crashing, even on Gamecube's Zelda collection disc and it's happened to me so often that I got put off playing it that way, then later same deal with PC emulations that I find crash guaranteed after several hours of play.

You're probably right on the PC side and I was being a dumbass, but my point stands that official Nintendo emulation of OoT on the Wii has never failed me and seem as solid as my gold cart, which either has never crash or did so long ago that I forgot.

I don't know what to tell you, but it happens. Rebel Strike also tends to crash in certain places too, and there's nothing wrong with my GC, it's just how it is and some are luckier than others. Some people's Majora's Mask game on that disc doesn't even crash so some swear, but I am not one of them. All I know is that it might have something to do with the rumble feature for that one.
