What was your favorite retro game developer /vr/?

For me, it was pic related. Ultima, wing commander, system shock... Origin pumped out masterpiece after masterpiece. It seems a bit sad that the people and companies who created our favorite games and shaped our childhoods have now mostly faded into obscurity.

Working Designs. I love all the extra effort they put into their packaging. Especially their deluxe editions. It makes me sad that that was probably at least partially responsible for their demise.

Hard to choose one (I love Origin too, by the way), but if someone pressed a gun against my head, I'd say pic related. A rare example of a developer that didn't make a single bad game (with the exception of maybe Star Control 3).

According to Victor Ireland, it actually wasn't. He said what really did them in was SCEA forcing them to compile several games they planned on releasing seperately as one package (Arc the Lad Collection and Growlanser Generations) and their general reluctance to allow 2D games on their North American systems (Which was a large reason Arc the Lad and Growlanser had to be sold as compliations) and the fact that projects like the PS2 Goemon game were cancelled by Sony as they were working on it.

They priced their games accordingly for the bonus stuff we got. Lunar 1 and 2 Complete were like $70 when they came out, compared to the $40 most PSX games were priced at at the time.

Wasn't Working Designs just a publisher? I haven't heard of a single game they developed.

Microprose, the kings of early simulations.

Silly OP, Origin didn't make System Shock, they just published it.
It's Looking Glass Studios (also responsible for Ultima Underworld, Ultima Underworld II, System Shock 2, Thief, and Thief II) who developed the game.

I guess I'd have to go with Treasure.
