>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Hey /crt/, posted several times in this thread before, but I'm giving away an HP P1110. Flat Trinitron tube, overall pretty good condition, just don't have a use for it since I also have a Sony CPD-G500 and a ViewSonic PS790. The Kijiji gougers typically have the Dell equivalent priced at $150+. Anyone here in the Toronto area, it's yours for free.

Unfortunately this one needs to go ASAP. If I can't successfully give it away to someone from /vr/ then there's a 90% chance it'll end up in the hands of a Reddit hoarder (and if that is the outcome, I will price it accordingly)

Just upgraded from a composite-only 27" Toshiba to a 27" Magnavox telly with YPbPr and S-video inputs. Found them both for free on fb marketplace this year.
The new set is fucking dope. The Toshiba has a really nice picture but the inputs put the Magnavox over the top. PS2 games look a lot better through component and it helps out PS1 games as well. The Dreamcast through S-video is hardly an upgrade from composite, at least in Soulcalibur, but we all know Dreamcast really shines through VGA. Now I have to relist this 100lb monster on the web and hope someone else scoops it.

>mfw parents have a 35" Trinitron at their cottage

It's absolutely fucking glorious. I like the 27" D-series I have at home, but the 35" just feels so immersive and beautiful, despite the geometry issues it's developed over the years. I would take it and put it in my house but I can't be arsed to move 200 pounds of leaded glass.

Agreed on the PVM. I have a 14M4U which I actually got for free the summer before I started university. It was nice as a desktop setup when I was in school, but after I got a house it just ended up sitting in a closet. It's super sharp and a really nice set, but I just don't really use it now that I have the space.

Anyways I would highly recommend a 36" D-series or Sony Triniton if you can get a few buddies to help move it. There are LOTS of them available, so not much of a white whale.

I ended up buying a Toshiba CRT for $25 in late November. It's more or less brand new and fresh out of the box, but I don't have much desk space left with it on my desk, nor does it have component. I do however have a smaller CRT monitor that's your standard white VGA cable sort. Would that and something like https://www.amazon.com/Component-Converter-BolAAzuL-Adapter-Supports/dp/B091L5KZK1/ be worthwhile to use as a replacement, do you suppose?

I don't really have a good explanation for why I want a 20L5. I already have a 20M2MDE, which I use for 3rd and 4th gen console, while the D20F1U is used for 5th generation consoles and later.
I just kind of want something in the middle. Something I could easily hook up to either of the other two monitors.
My true white whale would be a D32E1WU, but I'm not buying a monitor for the cost of a new car.
I hope you get your 36" CRT someday.

I think PC monitors were trashed a lot sooner because they're a lot lighter than TVs (making it easier to pick one up and throw it out on a whim) and their bulk is more noticeable than TVs, because they're on your desk in front of your face, rather than in a corner of a basement room. The day of reckoning is coming for all the consumer sets, but it came long ago for VGA monitors.

10 years ago, you could find CRT monitors no problem. My university used to throw them out every week. I picked up my Sun Ultra 1 and the accompanying 21" GDM-5010pt by just being at the ewaste bin at the right time (they were basically brand new). It's become noticeably more difficult to find CRT computer monitors in recent years. Even the municipal e-waste, which used to be pretty reliable for me, is now just a source of disappointment. There was a huge uptick in volume during COVID, probably because people had more time to clean out their basements and garages. Now it just seems like everything that can be thrown out... has been thrown out. And the result is fierce competition for the remaining units. Do not underestimate the CRT autists on FB marketplace.

I just use integer scale, when your monitor has pots for geometry easily accessible it's really no issue and I have to usually adjust anyways, so it's no different than having those pixels in the back porch if you'd be using 224p from the start.
Of course you could just add all the system and arcade resolutions from crt_emudriver and let RetroArch switch on demand, but I see no reason to overcomplicate it when I have to adjust picture usually anyways, even with geometry adjusted resolutions/modelines.

I have both 60, 59 and 50 Hz modes of it though for refresh rates.

There are definitely a lot more P1110s, specifically the Dell variants, than there are other professional or "prosumer" monitors. They are by far the most common large CRTs where I live. As for "so many that we're giving them away", that's more of a mixed bag. Either the listing is made by someone who knows what they got and puts up the usual "no lowballers" ad, or it's listed under some generic ad title like "old computer monitors" and it's being given away for free. You can definitely find them but it is sort of a game of being in the right place at the right time. I wish we were overflowing with 21" Trinitron tubes, but we aren't.

Damn this is a good setup. Love the NEC.

Is that a CPD-G520 off to the side? These Sonys are nice monitors, and they don't look out of place with "modern" setups. I got mine in December of 2020. Someone had it listed for $20 in another city, I drove 500km (~312 miles) round trip to go and get it. Completely worth the drive, it's a beautiful tube and mine had less than 500 hours of usage and no G2 drift.

Did you run a WinDAS calibration on yours? What sort of things needed adjustment?

>>8487073
If it's an FS120 model, then it should have an option to switch off the ClearEdge VM. To get into the service menu, use the following combination:

>Power Off
>DISP
>5
>VOL+
>Power On

If the above doesn't work, then skip the Vol+ step. The setting should be labeled "VMOFF" OR "VMO", something like that.

Good thing you didn't get one of the later ones, because those all have permanent VM I believe. You can dick around with the sharpness setting but it still doesn't get around that always-on ClearEdge.

There used to be some resource for these later Sony TVs but I can't find them anymore. The internet is more ephemeral and than I would like.

Only convergence needed complete redo, otherwise it's mint.
The other issue it has though is intermittent ghosting, narrowed it down to bad contacts between main and video boards. Currently waiting for improvised replacements to arrive. Semicommon problem on F520's.

It is one hell of a monitor, the specs are just half the story.
What still blows my mind is that it doesn't use any convergence strips or magnets, it's entierly digitally corrected. Probably the only reason why they could sell these for mere $1600.
>What are you referring to when you say "improvised" replacements?
Could not find the original headers or anything alike from JST or anyone else, so I'm gonna replace the interconnects with gold-plated machine pin headers. If that's not gonna fix this issue, the only option left is to solder the damn boards permanently togheter!

This monitor has a special feature called dynamic convergence, you can literally just drag points in a 9x5 grid with a mouse. WinDAS shenanigans.
But usually if your user/service menu convergence isn't enough, the only other option is taping magnets and conv-strips to inside of the tube.

Basically I picked up this LG 14'' and he's a hefty VCR combo boy, I don't have any tables or spaces handy to hold it properly for the time being so I just put in on the carpet. My question is if I play some vidya for an hour or two, will there (a) be a lot of static buildup in the carpet and (b) could this be a hazard for the TV? I do obviously want to make space for it ASAP so this is temporary, but I might be looking at a week or two of this situation maybe. Am I good for now? Thanks!

Thinking of grabbing a KV-20FS100 off of FB Marketplace. I used to own its bigger brother, the 27FS100, years ago, so I know for a fact these things kick ass. They're asking about $20 for it - no one gives CRTs away here where I live, and even lesser brands and models usually go for above that, so it sounds like an ok deal considering.

That said, what I would really like to do with it is hook it up to my PC. Apparently DP to VGA is now all the rage for outputting 240p, but I presume a transcoder would have to be involved to then convert VGA to component?

In this video, which is great overall and probably took a staggering amount of time and work, you can see a scanline generator hooked up to a CRT HDTV in action.
The CRT in question is a KV-34XBR800.
The result looks a lot like real 240p. And if you used RetroArch and its shaders instead of a SLG the result could be even better.

I did this myself a good while back with my KD-30XS955 using RetroArch on the Wii. The Wii doesn't support shaders, but it does do basic filters and overlays, so I just put on a basic scanline overlay on top of a game running at 480p, and it resulted in a VERY authentic 240p-esque image.

This was on an HD CRT, which doesn't do 240p natively. If you try to feed it 240p, it line-doubles it, and paradoxically some sets also see it as 480i and try to run it through a deinterlacing process, introducing artifacts. If all you had was such a set, this was your best bet. And the load is negligible, since it's literally just blacking out every other line.

So I recently picked up a KV-36FS200 for my PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox. Is it worth it to seek out one of the HD Wega CRT sets (KV-36XS955 or a KV-36HS420)? Kind of want one for watching 4:3 anime and progressive scan on games but don't know how much a difference it will make.

It's hard to say if it's worth it nowadays. On paper, they're the best displays for 480p 6th-gen games and arguably 7th-gen as well. However, you would ideally want to make sure they're reasonably well calibrated, or be able to do so yourself. I had one a while back that I got for cheap back when CRTs were just about done being phased out, one of the better Sony SFP tubes at that, and I was never 100% satisfied with the picture. Always seemed a bit fuzzy and out of focus, at least with 480p. I spent literal hours on the service menu trying to fix it as best as I could, but I never got it looking the way I wished.

If you find one and have the room to spare for it, can get it for dirt cheap, and don't mind looking like a sperg, I would maybe take a Wii or something that outputs 480p and ask if you can hook it up and see if you like how it looks, and go from there.

Yeah, ALWAYS test the hardware before you buy if possible. Be it a TV, an amp, speakers, whatever.
Personally I'm always taking a PS2, an RGB cable (EU here) and SoulCalibur 2 with me when I go check out a TV. SC2 outputs PAL, NTSC and 480p, so it's ideal for testing various TVs. The cable is sync-on-luma, so if the TV doesn't support RGB on the SCART port I'll get a black and white picture and know it right away.

Current classic cars, 80's and 90's ones, are sought after only because kids / teens who wanted them once can buy them now, that drives prices up just like CRTs etc.

With RetroArch and 1080i you should be able to create an image which is even more similar to 240p. It's easy enough to see for yourself by trying it with a PC CRT monitor. Only big difference is the interlacing, which might cause a little bit of combing on fast action.

This strange phenomena repeated 3 more times until i paused the game and changed the RCA cable for other one that i have "just in case". Nothing /x/ happened again since then.

>try a test pattern
dude, i wish i have some of that on my Samsung tv but there's nothing like that. All i have is a simple and ugly ass menu with basic options like change the brightness, volume (dual1 dual2, stereo) and a few more options.
>>8506162
there's no option like that on the main menu. "Screen adjust" just let you play with the directional arrows of your remote to set the picture frame but that's all.

WAIT. By default the tv uses this "Normal" res that is fullscreen right? well i just changed it to 16:9 while changing channels and the bottom started shaking vigorously. I've recorded a video but i cant upload it idk why thought

Its better than LED/LCD for day to day tasks. Makes me think the only reason LED/LCD took off was size and manufacturing expense.
I would like to run it at 1600x1200 @85hz, but my video card can only handle that resolution at 60hz, and that makes it worse for text than 1280x1024 @75, which is my sweetspot right now for all tasks.
Video card can also not handle 1920x1440 at any refresh rate. I will get either a narrow profile video card which can support it for my mini PC, if not an entirely new PC soon enough.
Manufacture date is 2002. Would like to squeeze mkre than decade out of this.

Contrast and brightness I have set at 50%. Rgb at a custom level from previous owner, which looks close to 50/50/50. Previous owner also ram this at like 10% brightness and 70% contrast.

I have the manual, but I would like to find the schematics tech manual for future proofing parts stockpile.

What settings do you run your 1250 at? Maybe you have some superior setup.

Here's the service manual in case you can't find it, I had it downloaded when looking for one for my FE1250. It details how to access the service menu which has a lot more options if you ever want to tinker with it. Has a parts list, but no shematics.
Also I'd like to remind again that the FE1250 and FE1250+ are completely different monitors. Mine was made in 2000.
If anyone ends up here thru search engines or something looking for a FE1250 service manual, get this https://elektrotanya.com/nec_fe950_a_b_r_crt_monitor.pdf/download.html it's not just for FE950 but all in the series. Took me a while to find. ..

>Contrast and brightness I have set at 50%. Rgb at a custom level from previous owner, which looks close to 50/50/50.
>What settings do you run your 1250 at? Maybe you have some superior setup.
Mine isn't directly comparable as my color gains don't let you "overdrive" them, 100 is the default and you lower them for white balance. Different calibration and wear too. But around 25% brigthness with 50-100% contrast, depending on what I do. RGBs at 100-85-60 for ~6500k.
This monitor doesn't have a persistent hour counter, but I estimate it to be around 20k. Certainly been used but still has a long life ahead.

>but my video card can only handle that resolution at 60hz
What's your setup, are you using an adapter? If so, it's probably your adapter limiting you, buy the Delock 62967 or Startech DP2VGAHD20.
I use the default 1200p85hz mode a lot, and if feeling fancy 1440i120hz. For certain video games I use modes like 960i200hz - 200hz appears to be the actual limit of this monitor, the non-plus at least.

Oh, interesting. I actually found the schematics for the FE1250, which I assumed would be somewhat similar to the + model.

>But around 25% brigthness with 50-100% contrast, depending on what I do. RGBs at 100-85-60 for ~6500k.
I've seen those 8500k, 6500k options in the service menu, but im not quite sure what they mean. I'll have to look them up. I used some site with some test images for colors, gradients and such to set it up.

>This monitor doesn't have a persistent hour counter, but I estimate it to be around 20k. Certainly been used but still has a long life ahead.
Mine doesn't seem to have one either. Not sure how to estimate, other than the previous owner telling me it sat for about a decade in a home office mac, unplugged.

Just the chassis design tells an interesting tale, the FE1250+ looks exactly like the Mitsubishi 2060u but with different buttons, while the OG FE1250 used a design unique to NEC. Later on NEC didn't even bother changing buttons, they're literally just repainted Mitsubishis.
I think the awesome menus were NECs contribution tho, Mitsubishi monitors didn't get them until that 2060u generation. Convergence patterns in OSD, how cool is that!? In year 2000 no less!!

Haven't seen that yet, I'll have to mess with that too. I'll just wait for sunday for the adapter to get here and I can get a 1200p resolution up, then I'll actually put in effort into perfect settings. Right now I got the fit right, went to 6500k and it looks much better than the old settings too. The monitor is flat, but there is a slight curvature to the picture that I'll have to adjust as well. But just like the height/width left/right, if I do it now I'll have to do it again once I get the adapter, so better to just wait.
I can get a much clearer picture with 6500k at a lower brightness, which I think is good for the monitor.... You can tell this thing was very expensive in its day, makes me a bit anxious to take good care of it.

It's what color your whites are supposed to be, in color temperature. These monitors have factory-calibrated presets but with usage they'll drift out of calibration. My NEC looks around 1000k colder than what the presets claim, so running custom is necessary if I want it to match my other monitors. I really need a good colorimeter tho ..

>These monitors have factory-calibrated presets but with usage they'll drift out of calibration. My NEC looks around 1000k colder than what the presets claim, so running custom is necessary if I want it to match my other monitors. I really need a good colorimeter tho ..
Interesting. I have it at rgb 6500k now and it looks good, but too bright on white pages. 6500k preset also won't let me adjust brightness/contrast, so I'll have to set it to the 100r/85g/60b which is kinda close but not exactly the same as 6500k, but at least I can get brightness lowered for it.

Haven't cleaned the interior or dust, but it doesn't look dusty as I've peeked around with a flashlight.

Looks good to me. Crazy how fast the monitor goes from off to full vibrant colors. When I was a kid, I remember it taking at least ten minutes for the colors to come up to full brightness. I guess fancy CRTs just get to full color in under 30.

I bought all the old ps1 and ps2 games on the online store and downloaded them, along with some purchased.
But yeah, I don't have any game systems or games installed on my PC to look at old pixel based games, so I just googled "street fighter online" to see if its actually any smoother like you guys say. Was doing a little research about joysticks and noticed the monitor that shipped in Capcom Q Grand Am 25 cabinets was a 15/24 khz Nanao monitor.
This is interesting because CPS2 games are 15khz only. But the monitor in the cabinet is designed to resolve 24 khz detail. That means it will have a sharp, delineated image at 15 khz.
This is the Dodonpachi test screen displayed one such monitor after a cap kit had been done. This was done by a member of arcade-projects.com. To me it looks like my expectation is correct.
This is a monitor from 1993.

>> No.8513124

Does it actually help with sharpness? Isn't pitch and TVL more important in the tube itself? Since circuitry to support 24kHz itself doesn't change much for quality at 15kHz.
Or did you mean that the tube itself is higher quality than most 15kHz since it support sharper 24kHz modes?

This is assuming the tube is matched to the circuity to allow the full 24khz detail to come out.
It's possible it is only compatible with 25 khz and doesn't resolve the detail fully, but from looking at photos of games on the tube in action I don't think that is the case. I think it is a fairly high TVL.

Thinking this over a little more...

This would assume a 24 khz monitor needs a finer dot pitch to display all of the detail in a 24 khz resolution.
But it might not.
After all, 24 khz (also known as medium res) is still only something like 496x384 (it can vary).
Standard Definition television tubes are designed to display 480i content. So perhaps there's not really any difference in dot pitch necessary to display 24 khz games? Just extra circuitry.

Nanao used Toshiba tubes. Perhaps it is possible one could track down a television with the same or similar tube and RGB mod it.

>Sony KV-35V6

Good find. I believe my parents have almost this exact same model (KV-35V35) and they still use it daily. It's a bit older than what most people around here seem to have (early-mid 1990s), and unfortunately with several hours of daily use for ~27 years it's a little past its prime. The tube is dimming and it has geometry/colour issues that I just cannot fix (one of which is a permanent curve in the picture, similar to your flat screen Trinitron). But in its prime, and even up until a couple years ago, it was so fucking good. It had gorgeous picture and tons of inputs. I believe that it was a very high-end set when it was released, it cost something like $3,000-$3,500 Canadiabux in 1995 (about $4,900-$5,700 in 2021 dollars), and was just one slot below the XBR, which was Sony's top-range model.

I have a KV-27S42 which is pretty good but decidedly more middle class compared to the KV-35V35. Unfortunately, because my parents' 35" is so worn out, it just makes more sense for me to keep the smaller one. Consider yourself lucky that you have both the big tube and the good picture.

Out of curiosity, what city are you in?
