The core game is still on the PS version and it is readily available as the cheapest edition. For the least censored version, PC always wins, but it may not be kosher in some places since the characters are 14 thus unlawful to have.

Not the original, the Special Edition PC release is the one you'd want if your municipality allows for such drawings. Otherwise, the Playstation version is the safest to get.

the original pc version is really infamous to the point that the console versions were actively recommended, the pc version had very strange hardware requirements so its almost guaranteed to run like shit, and no one liked how despite those the game is simple as hell and doesnt have any interesting gameplay systems, not to mention how the box recommends a disc drive with 200x read speed.

the special edition is way better even with how much little it actually adds.

There is a DVD-ROM version of the game released in 2001 with the 3rd Second Impact Box set. It's the original PC game but in 1 disc and it runs fine.

I only just watched EVA back in November after putting it off for years and I loved it. I have no interest in all the different side shit but Mana is making me consider checking out Iron Maiden. Does it at least somewhat care about being an EVA story or is it all dating sim schlock

It is very much worth playing/watching, think of it as an Evangelion OVA or TV Special, a side-story that happens during the action arc (eps 7-12 or so, the ones with asuka but before touji has the accident).
The art, voice acting etc is all on par with TV episodes, except it's still images, very little animation if any (stuff like the Nerv elevator floor track thing is very well done as I remember, though).
Story is actually neat, doesn't do the wrong things that the Saturn games did (pulling angels out the ass), Iron Maiden has no angel stuff, it's purely a human drama.
