How come so many old PC games don't have a traditional single player campaign mode? I've played a lot of games where you can...do stuff but once you're done you just get kicked back to the menu without making any sort of progression.

Racing games seem particularly guilty (there's no season mode or unlockables -- what you see in the menus is what you get).

it has some to do with player expectations. for tons of games merely being able to configure everything and jump into a game sandbox-style was more than enough to be satisfying. a lot of those games wouldn't necessarily benefit from a campaign mode anyway

Honestly my own take on this is I feel like early PC games were trying to market themselves to people without a "gamer" mindset. Back then people didn't see PC as a gaming platform so the sort of games that were sold on it were made with that in mind.

Depends on how far back we're going. By 98 it was absolutely considered to be a gaming device by many. Except dad, of course.

Your dad is the type I'd expect to see getting marketed to by 90s PC games. Things like NASCAR or flight sims.

He did enjoy playing Trophy Bass 2 and Microsoft's Golf 2.0, mostly when he didn't think I was watching.

Well what would you like to discuss?

I'm not sure that I understand OP. I think of 90s games and I think of Doom, Quake, Marathon, or RTS games with progressing stories. Even earlier stuff like Duke Nukem (the platformer) and Jazz Jackrabbit, Turrican, etc. had progression. Am I just misunderstanding your definition? An example would be welcome.

Early 3D games, I guess. Like I said racing games really don't feel robust. Viper Racing just has you drop into a race after setting some settings but there's nothing to work towards. You can't unlock new tracks or earn championship points or anything. It's just set up race, race, back to the menu, set up another race.

This is how I felt about RTSs. Most of them did have a good campaign, but the real attraction was the ability to fuck around with bots in skirmish, or multiplayer.

pc gaming is for people who like fucking around with settings more than actually playing
