Even as a sequel, it's great, because it fucks with your expectations. The game is like a fever dream. Chrono Cross was the MGS2 bait-and-switch formula years prior. Legend of Dragoon feels a bit more half baked due to the nature of how you access magic and how rapidly you go through MP. It is very addition focused (addition is the name for the physical attack skills you need to do timed button inputs for).

Chrono Cross is more interesting because you start out a battle unable being able to cast spells. You need to land physical attacks to charge up your spell gauge (three attacks giving you one, two, or three bars). Then you're able to utilize the spell in that slot once for that battle and your spells refresh every battle. Characters have many rows and columns to equip spells to, and if you put weaker spells in more advanced slots they gain more power.

The characters turn ends when they run out if stamina, which actions consume. It is entirely possible to put yourself in a stamina deficit and you end up getting skipped for a turn.

Books/movies aren't the same as video games. Some people don't care as much for the story outside of a dressing for player motivation to adventure or generally progress to beat the game.

Personally I don't even care about the shift in story between the Genesis and Dreamcast Sonic games, I do care how the 3D Sonic games control which greatly impacts my enjoyment of them. I don't find Chrono Cross offensive in that regard.

however chrono cross is excellent on its own and playing chrono trigger is absolutely not a prerecquisite
the chrono trigger story is just used as background lore here
the last jedi comparison doesn't really work because the last jedi is a terrible movie even for star wars while chrono cross is one of the best rpgs on the playstation.
I do think of it as a mistake to try and intertwine chrono trigger's story into chrono cross because it adds nothing except frustrating chrono trigger fans

just don't think of it as a continuation of chrono trigger and it suddenly becomes a 10/10

The game keeps harping this point, as if it's set in the modern world or a cyberpunk dystopia, but it's set in a tropical paradise with zero industry and approximately zero actual ecodamage. The dickhead dwarves that genocide the fairies with their steampunk war machines did much, much more to damage the environment than anything by any human in the game.

There's 2 worlds you can travel between in the game; There's multiple islands and characters pulled from less connected worlds. There's a frequent plot mechanic of a character being dead in one world, but alive in the other world.

As someone who hates Cross, I can agree with that. It was really dragged down by shoehorning it into being a sequel when it is so obviously not. It would have worked much better as a Final Fantasy style loose "sequel" keeping some names and easter eggs and jettisoning the epic plotdumps that tried to mix oil and water.
