It isn't. For a first outing 12 characters and 9 stages is legitimately impressive. The arcade mode isn't incredible but has plenty of assets unique to it.

Relatively low budget game that was supposed to be Japan-only, but ended up becoming a surprise hit

>> No.8457391

You could tell the vast majority of the development time went into balancing. It's surprisingly well-balanced for a game they had to build completely from the ground up.
Pikachu and Kirby are a bit OP, but you do frequently see other characters in tournaments.

Download smash remix. Good mod that adds new characters and stages. The stage selection is questionable but for the most part it's a version I would've wanted as a kid.

I'm always impressed how low key the first Smash game was. It just more or less happened and was treated as a goofy novelty more than anything amazing. It literally went from a preview in Nintendo Power one month to "out now in stores" the very next. Hell, the game didn't even make the main attraction of the cover: it got a little push into a corner. The spot where a shipping label would cover up.

It’s crazy to me they didn’t think a fighter with Mario, Link, Samus and Pikachu wouldn’t be a big deal. It’s still wild they’re in a game together, let alone having Sephiroth, Kazuya and Sonic join.

No fucking autistic or over the top exploits that kill analog joysticks, no stupid anime characters, no shit dlc, even if the rooster isn't big it is more balanced than many of the future entrys of the game.
You can kill others so cheaply, 4 player is pure madness, combos feel good and the while thing feels loyal to the time it was released in terms of graphics.

Melee and Brawl had this really weird problem where just about everything had to be made of polygons instead of just a texture
Ness looks so weird because they fully modeled a mouth for him instead of just drawing it onto his face
Kirby has the same problem, where if you pause and zoom in his tiny dot mouth is actually a puckered hole; it just looks gross

>> No.8465856

>>8465591
I think the best way they could do target test is to treat it like an event mode. Just create a shitload of layouts with escalating difficulty, let the player use whoever they feel like. Brawl ALMOST does this, but there's only like... five of them.

I think something like "speed targets" would be more fun if you're going to just go universal stages, where each time you hit a target another one or two appear immediately (with a warning where the next couple will appear). It would be more a test of spacing and knowing which attacks can be comboed into other attacks quickly.

But character-specific stages are absolutely more fun, since you can really take advantage of their personal attributes. You can't have a stage specifically tailored to Link's Boomerang shenanigans if every character has to be able to complete it.
