Quick question, what's better for retro gaming? Aperture grill or Shadow mask?

Disgusting emulator and disgusting amount of scan-lines.

Shadow mask isn't good for anything other than being slightly more rugged. Aperture grille wires can tangle if you hit the monitor really hard, but I've never seen this happen. Also, aperture grilles have the tiny horizontal stabilizer wires but they're only visible if you look very close. Picture quality wise, aperture grilles are vastly superior. And shadow masks do have visible scanlines I don't know what you're talking about.

I think it just boils down to personal preference and what you want.

However, I have heard that Aperture grilles use significantly less power. That would be something that would interest me.

I've never had one. How strong are the actual scanlines?

Depends on the size and how well-calibrated the display is. If the TV has convergence issues, scanlines will sort of blur together more.

a while back I was responding to some person that believed you had to have big ugly scanline filters in order for games to look good because that was the way real CRTs looked, and I pointed out that you couldn't see the scanlines from a foot away with most CRTs and his response was something along the lines of "well your TV must have been shadow masked, it was a mask used to shadow out the scanlines"
and that was pretty much what I was picking on there.
