Yep, each map has its own author in Realm of Pathoris, but I've played 4 maps so far, and all of them are overcrowded (not necessary a bad thing). The maps style is different, liked all of them for being detailed and using nicely looking textures. Map 4 was interesting, it is kind of "on rails" (still have some backtracking and buildings you can enter), when you are going forward the narrow valley and can see most enemies from far away.

There are many Christmas/winter Doom wads, you can find them by just searching for the keywords on idgames archive.

Hexen 2 expansion pack (Portal Of Praevus). Snowy medieval village and snowy Tibetan temples.
Daikatana episode 3. Snowy medieval castles. Its actually enjoyable, unlike the horrible episode 1.
Duke Nukem Nuclear Winter. It fucking blows overall, but the first 2 maps are Christmas remixes of original Duke 3D maps which are pretty fun.

I'm almost halfway through Descent 2 (played through Chocolate Descent).
Overall, I like it less than Descent 1 I would say.
There's plenty of things it does better, like holy shit double the resolution, afterburner, headlight, etc.
But 4 midi tracks vs 13 industrial ones for 30 levels, "Themed" solar systems, weapon bloat, more confusing levels (I never got lost in Descent 1 but it happened once or twice in Descent 2) + "mandatory" secrets, the way secret levels are handled, less memorable robots, easier homers and difficulty in general make it hard to enjoy it as much.
I still really like it and Vertigo looks awesome as well. I heard it has Descent 1 enemies including Drillers, is that true?

Facts about vanilla check out, but about whether it is still Doom is debatable.
Like, it's more about how much you are willing to stretch definition of the word Doom. Are standalone TCs still Doom? Are ZDoom games still Doom? Is Hexen Doom?
I get that his point was more about apparent elitism about source port of choice and modding being justified by saying that it's closer to the original, which is silly indeed, but I'd say that he stretches it too far at the end.

This is a neat little WAD. The first ep was rather plain but it really picks up on the second and third parts because of some great combat scenarios and map designs. I've been playing some older WADs recently, as I only got into Doom properly this year, having since cleared all the officially release content. Probably gonna focus on Memento Mori next.

What are some other cool WADs from the late-90s/early-00s?

Chocolate Doom strives to be as accurate to the Vanilla engine as possible, right down to the 320x200 screen resolution, bugs and map limitations. It does have options to disable the savegame and demo limits, for the player's convenience, but thats about it.

Crispy Doom is a good choice for a "vanilla"-ish vibe. Screen resolution is doubled with a widescreen option, and map limitations are gone so limit-removing maps work here.

DSDA-Doom and Woof are also good choices if you want support for Boom/MBF(21) mapsets, and also have complevels. DSDA-Doom featuring much higher screen resolutions, and hardware rendering. Woof is somewhat like Crispy Doom.

There are some quirks to getting it to work. The batch file has to look like:

The "" after start was necessary when running through the task scheduler. And there's an "optional" run location field I'm the task scheduler that isn't actually optional...

I remember playing the shareware at my friend's house, on easiest difficulty and with all the cheat codes on, blasting away all opposition with a rocket launcher, not bothering with secrets – and always being spooked by the music and the atmosphere of Phobos Anomaly, nevermind the scary Barons that could take SIX rockets into the face.

I remember getting the full version from a friend of a friend, stalking the Halls of the Damned and being jump-scared by a Baron of Hell out of the dark and getting gibbed. I remember the first time I came face to face with a cyberdemon, the sight of once-formidable Barons gutted on the walls. I remember the first time I held a BFG in my hands, and witnessed its power. I remember looking up all the secrets this time. Manually, because we didn't have an internet yet.

Doom was one of the only two games – the other being Diablo – to ever give me nightmares. I still see them from time to time. Cherished memories of thrill and horror and desperate struggle, burned right into the depths of my soul.

But it's nothing new and nothing special anymore, especially since mouselook. We can take on a dozen cyberdemons at once now. We're looking for new challenges and new adventures. So the community gives us ever more hectic and bloody slaughtermaps, or gorgeous new custom landscapes to explore, usually both. It's great to see so many people still so enthusiastic of such an old game, finding new ways of keeping it fresh. I think Auger;Zenith is my favourite of this year – great cyberpunk atmosphere, great music, challenging without overwhelming.

And yet... the farther we go, the ever greater dissonance I feel with the core gameplay. We've got these beautiful setpieces that we can zoom through at mach five, yet we fill them with the same old slow-ass zombies and their archaic hitscan weapons and sluggish fireballs. Even the once-scary Barons reduced into fodder that has to be multiplied hundredfold before I break a sweat.

My toaster struggles to render Lullaby or Dark Universe, yet the bloodshed done within them hasn't kept up. New modern high-resolution arenas to push through, paired with the oldest and most outdated core gameplay experience. Like Uncanny Valley made flesh.

That's the main reason I tend to go with Brutal Doom nowadays. For all of the (rightfully) derided comic book bullshit and pointless glory-kills and one-liners and other extraneous additions, it does at least speed things up. The enemies can now keep up with me, blow up nicely under my weapons, and the storm of bullets plinking at the walls all around me is just what I needed to make the zooming around feel as frantic as it should.

But I digress. I don't want to play Brutal Doom now. I don't want to modernize things. I want to feel like a kid again.

I want to explore a low-res i486 hellscape with a crushing atmosphere where anything can happen. To gaze into the abyss and inspire my own nightmares. To turn around on my keyboard as slow as a tank, feel threatened even by smaller groups of enemies, not so much faster than they are. A little bit of fear, a little bit of wonder, a little bit of triumph in finding something new.

Is such a thing even possible anymore? Can we ever go back? Now that we've overcome the Twilight Massacre, as even the once-legendary Hell Revealed is feeling positively quaint, as the cyberdemon is our punching bag, can we ever again be scared by all lights turning off and mere four imps coming in from behind?

As the society crumbles around us, as the environment chokes and the world burns, as our prospects of one day making it to Mars for real look ever bleaker... as our own bodies grow old and our minds sluggish, as our bones ache and our future looks hopeless, nothing but a slow death to look forward to... can we possibly, one last time, pretend it's 1993?

bad enemy placement
overreliance on traps and jumpscares- designed around quicksaves but limits them
every enemy has to be dealt with by backpedalling rather than bobbing and weaving because their ai is hyperaggressive and there's no real room to bait out attacks up close most of the time
like half the roster explodes on death and the toad guys spit instagib bouncy projectiles from hell upon dying that you can't possibly reliably dodge except by, you guessed it, backpedalling, which just slows the game down tremendously
every level ends with a really big fight you can just run past and absolutely should run past because the combat is a boring slog on that large of a scale
alt fires are good in concept but either clunky or poorly balanced across the board
half the items are worthless and the other half are vital for a blind run on outlander

kinda just feels like shit, but people are more upset about the game never getting finished than all that

any wads meant for uv-fast?
I started playing uv-fast as a group of friends and I started speedrunning episode 1 uv-fast for fun, and I realized that fast monsters and fast projectiles are truly the gentleman's way of playing Doom.
I can no longer play regular Ultra Violence regular, henceforth referred to as Mild Roughness, or MR, because the full spectrum of Doom gameplay as been revealed to me via UV-f.

I would just play any regular wad as UV-f, since some of the joy of UV-f is the unintended difficulty, but other times it makes some maps genuinely unplayable as a firing line can kill you in 2 seconds and there is nothing you can do since they intended MR behavior.

>overreliance on traps and jumpscares- designed around quicksaves but limits them
I liked the idea of saves system on paper. There's an indie platformer called "They Bleed Pixels" which has similar system, although you earned save by killing enough enemies. Anyway, when I finally touched Wrath myself I learned there're already checkpoints on maps in form of altars, just enough of them. Thus I barely used those save sigils, or whatever they called.
There are traps, but they are as fair as, say, Quake, i.e. not hard to react to. Plus you have tons of inventory items which are OP as hell.
In the end, I don't get complaints about quicksaves. Tbf I played on Hard and only yet to try Outlander difficulty. Maybe all my 20+ sigils are gonna be quickly depleted there :)
>every enemy has to be dealt with by backpedalling rather than bobbing and weaving
I decided to try Wrath mostly because one anon here told how it's similar to Serious Sam in terms of fight mechanics. He's right, it really feels like Sam, in a way how aggresively enemies approach you while constantly throwing projectiles. So you have to deal with targets ASAP or start backpedalling.
I like combat in SS games, so I liked it here.

sam's levels are more structured for the run backwards strategy than wrath's, and its enemies are more choreographed. wrath presents a very odd middle ground that i don't think works. you can definitely get used to it, but it's gonna be a bumpy ride til you memorize enemy spawn locations.

game's biggest problem is flat copy-pasted levels with bland spawn-in encounters.
part of it, I think, is that without a full enemy roster all combat so far was done in some sort of placeholder mode. the plasmagun thingie for example would have made the big tree platforming sequence way less obnoxious, but it only got added later. so you're stuck with a hundred cacos and a nailgun.
levels jump between the extremes of cramped/open. in the garden dome level sometimes a room is so packed that the only option is to hang back and take potshots from the doorway, which is already a problem even without that. most other levels are instead too open, no purpose or "edge" to most encounters.
and it's just kinda lifeless in general: no enemy patrols, or moving machinery, or even basic monster closets. and the lighting is static, seems to be a limitation of q3 map format. doesn't help that they picked a drab theme for the demo episode.
but yeah, steam people are mostly complaining about delays and shit. and plebs disliking the extremely lenient save system. I also got the impression that a bunch of people tricked themselves into thinking that Wrath is made by "AD team", when I'm almost sure none of the devs had any part in it.

You can also tell Foobar to use specific soundfonts/instrument sets in the options.

I really wish that it let you swap them around more conveniently with like a dropdown menu in the front interface though, because when listening to lots of different .midis, some sound good in some soundfonts, while others sound off for even really bad (because they were composed around a specific one). I like dodge stuff like this. Slides\dodges with some invincibility if necessary and animation cancelling is something that is taking long for fucking western developers to take as normal.

Movement is always good, the nice thing about experimental pc games and even other consoles games form the 90s and 00s is that you always had control even when you didnt need to. Once press x to do shit and auto jumping started becoming common things became ultra stiff.
Japs because of arcade environment always did it naturally. Although it evens out in autism simulators and other genres they don't have or particularly do.

What I mean to say is that by the benefit of total control things like quake 1 play smooth as fuck. Give the me ability to fail a jump.

Doombuilder is quite easy, the first one was kind of revolutionary at the time because it was just a lot better and more user friendly than previous available software, and it was free.

The newest version is Ultimate Doom Builder. If you're all new to Doom mapping, I would suggest to keep things simple enough, and do either Boom/MBF21 map format, or vanilla but ignoring the old static limits (all but one of the modern ports aren't held by those anyway). Unless you have really ambitious ideas for your level, in which case UDMF can do a lot, though I feel it can also almost lead to choice paralysis with all the different options and values for everything.

For managing lumps and stuff in your .wad (like adding new textures and what not), then you'll want Slade3. That program is also largely straight forward.

I wish I could enjoy serious sam and Duke nukem, but they just don't click with me. Something about their movement and shooting just feels off.

Bastardized Ossuary Of Misery by Kaito and Plecthron (from Mapwich 1)
It's dark as fuck, has extremely obnoxious encounters, instakill barrel traps, and all this crap going for like 40 minutes.

There's no real curve to Doom mapping, you just draw shapes. I guess after a while you might want to draw prettier shapes, like Ribbiks does, but that's another thing.

Ignoring source ports.
Give me a good reason why would someone play Mac Doom, Doom95, RISC OS Doom, Linux Doom, NextStep Doom, Unity port, BFG Edition port, PC-98 Doom, QNX Doom, WinDoom, OS/2 Doom, BeOS Doom, Solaris Doom, SGI Doom or any of the console ports over the superior chad DOS version.

Just install and play. No need to make a bat file or memory DOS command if you're that braindead

Your parents decided to reveal your adoption by buying you that version of DOOM 3 as an analogy of their expectations of you: "There's something good in you, even if a bit jank".

>Mac Doom
>PC-98 Doom
>Linux Doom
It's the 90s and that's the ports available to people with certain non Windows computers?

>WinDoom
Wasn't this one leaked? I don't think it ever had a properly finished build published, it's like a rough precursor to Doom 95

>Doom95
It's the 90s and people want to play Final Doom and limit removing, but Boom doesn't exist yet.

>NextStep Doom
It's 1993 and the devs are developing and playtesting Doom before it is released.
I think virtually nobody but iD Software and close associates have actually played the NeXTSTEP builds, have those even been published or leaked?

>Unity port
They're a consoleonly pleb, and see that they can get what's actually a really good and faithful port for just a couple of dollars.

>BFG Edition port
They don't know better.

>console ports
There's no Doom 64 for DOS. Or it's 2004 and you want Doom 2 in your pocket, which a GBA SP can provide pretty comfortably.

>over the superior chad DOS version.
Because Crispy Doom is a really comfy and straightforward port for playing limit removing classic Doom, and it has only the bells and whistles that anyone would really need for original gameplay.
