Doom the way id wouldn't, doing the opposite of Romero's design rules:
>Always changing floor height when I wanted to change floor textures.
Easy rule to break. Give rooms different floor textures all the time.
>Using special border textures between different wall segments and doorways.
Another easy one, just don't make wall trims.
>Being strict about texture alignment.
Yet another easy one, though I would argue breaking this rule often would result in a very amateurish and bad looking map regardless of the other rules.
>Conscious use of contrast everywhere in a level between light and dark areas, cramped and open areas.
No contrast of light and space will definitely stand out in the form of constant repetition. Would be hard to design a map that looks tolerable while breaking this rule.
>Making sure that if a player could see outside that they should be able to somehow get there.
Extremely devilish to break this rule. Tons of outside areas that look like they can be accessed but can't.
>Being strict about designing several secret areas on every level.
Spam secrets, put secrets inside of secrets, have secrets activate with seemingly random linedefs and switches. All types of fun to be had.
>Making my levels flow so the player will revisit areas several times so they will better understand the 3D space of the level.
Could easily break by just making a super linear level but would be boring. Hard to break otherwise.
>Creating easily recognizable landmarks in several places for easier navigation.
Broken by making rooms look very similar, enough said.

Some that aren't out yet. Selaco...

All levels, including the secret ones, on Hotshot, continuous, without mid-level saving (only once, as soon as I enter a new map), tried to rescue all hostages but couldn't, tried to play without losing any lives but couldn't.
It's such a difficult game, but everything about is so memorable, the movement is top notch, the music is top notch, the enemy A.I. is top notch, especially for it's time (it's very primitive but it uses the level design well).
10/10, imagine calling Plutonia or Blood hard when this game exists.

Depends on your view of "modern game". I'd agree with Supplice playing very much like a "modern and modded megawad" and is otherwise old Doom-styled gameplay, less like what I'd expect out of a modern shooter. That Spelaco game looks like it's going to follow more modern FPS conventions, I'm hoping linear gameplay isn't one of them.

Plus, I felt kinda burnt out after AM after rushing to the deadline, just to find out it didn't matter and you have another year to submit stuff.

That said, I would find it cool if we could make a modding project instead of a mapping project. Like DUMP weapons, maybe for Zandro even so it could be usable in the Friday Night Firefight, or in the latest GZD to still people's fears of using ZScript.

Pinkies and spectres are easily defeated by stepping back, but they are still used to block player's movement.

Computer area map and light amplification just kinda defeat the design ambition, while invisibility is actively detrimental when dealing with projectile monsters.

I understood him, he was just saying recent games.

Its been kinda bare for me as well, but its good to jump back into old classics, been playing homeworld 1 in anticipation for H3 after the announcement.

Its never beet at the same time better and worse for videogames its a weird juncture. Incredible indie small dev stuff but at the same time tons of unfinished stuff.

As for triple A I only touch stuff like platinum and from soft, most other console shit disgusts me. Eternal included.

>>8450135
Its a gay phase that will last a while. But the experimentation on the small devs side is so intense I find myself with no money to support the people that matter. Recently shit like Highfleet and actually FPS like Gloomwood and Fallen Aces.

Too much stuff and too little at the same time. Maybe this is saturation.

Honestly just the shittest enemy in the doom roster so I don't blame mappers for this. They are rarely fun, they're just annoying filler.

>area maps and light visors

this just comes don to the community and meta more than mappers. Everyone seems to play in prBoom with gamma on 3000 so fun stuff like dark mazes kinda loses its impact.

Doom 64. You can get it on PC now, even PS4, Switch, and XBone. There's even an older, free version of the PC port, Doom64EX, though it lacks the new bonus episode the rereleases have.

In case you're unfamiliar, Doom 64 was originally gonna be just another enhanced port, like Playstation Doom, but then the team at Midway got grander ideas, and they got the go-ahead from iD Software
>We could easily upgrade the engine some more, and a since we've already made couple of new levels, what if we made ALL new levels? Y'know, to make it more exclusive.
>Oh, and what if we did all new graphics too? We already have all new sounds, we could do our own takes on the guns and monsters!
>Sounds cool. Mm.
>Yeah, that'd be groovy, go ahead!

So what you have is a sort of Doom 2.5, still plays basically the same, much of what's under the hood is still the same, but with all new levels featuring scripted sequences to create more complex traps and puzzles, as well as an all new style and aesthetic. Lacks some stuff from the previous games, but it does try to do the most within its hardware restrictions, and the resulting game is quite a lot of fun. Highest difficulty suggested if you have any FPS experience.

For the base game, yeah, you can basically only alter existing things. There's some unused frames and actors which you can put to use, but not a whole lot, Doom didn't have all that much foresight when it came to modding, only really the provision for loading levels, and not in a convenient manner.

Really, Doom had very barebones means for this kind of stuff in the beginning. The original DoomED program was written and ran on NeXTSTEP work stations, along with the core build of Doom itself, Doom being intended as a product and thus adapted to its target home computers (and eventually consoles), but DoomED wasn't.
Instead, fans had to figure all of this out on their own, which took some time.
The very first (known) custom level for Doom was a square room made through hex editing, it didn't have any nodes built so it didn't even work. With times, people figured out usable software, one of the good early ones was DeepSea, which had a free demo that allowed you a limited amount of linedefs, but if you paid $30 you could get a full version. Still you had to get a separate program to build the nodes for your level, and early nodebuilders were slow, sometimes imprecise and error prone, easily tripped up by fine detail. It wasn't unusual for you to leave your level to have its nodes built, then you come back and see the nodebuilder had shat its pants, and you'd have to try again, probably alter whatever had defeated it so it didn't shit its pants more.

Doom Builder was such a fantastic tool, it made level editing a million times faster, easier, and more reliable.

Now, for loading levels, either you loaded doom.wad like normal, OR, you loaded up myhouse.wad, and the game would crash at launch. That's because myhouse.wad only contained the data for the single level you made, and none of the other assets like the sprites, textures, palette, sounds, etc (except for those hilarious The Simpsons soundbytes you put in).

No, the original .exe doesn't let you load two .wad files at once, instead you had to get a third party program called DeuSFX, which would let you patch the new content in any new .wad onto doom.wad (and then revert doom.wad to its original state later when you wanted it to). This would lead to doom.wad, doom2.wad, tnt.wad, and plutonia.wad to be referred to as "internal .wads" (iwads), and any usermade content as "patch .wads" (pwads), because you used one as a base and then patched new content onto it.

Doom 95, which shipped with Final Doom, was pretty rough around the edges in some ways, but one of its big features was that the launcher would let you actually load another .wad file on top of the base one without having to do any of that patching nonsense. Only one though.
John Carmack releasing the source code for Doom in 1997 really opened an incredible amount of doors, and would lead to many different sourceports, such as Boom. Being able to just load multiple .wads together would become a staple feature, and one nobody has regretted.<span class="fortune" style="color:#532dfc">

This is probably one of the things that annoyed me most, personally. I would have liked the idea of just making it the exhibition piece for the holiday and finalizing everything with fixes and tweaks in the following weeks was going to be it. But no. At least we actually made something for the event, and it was fun to do and play all the maps that were submitted.

I'm of the opinion of having a separate 'part two'.

But for real now, development is still going on, it just slowed down for a while due to eye surgeries and spending a lot of time mapping (which has been very fun). I might try to work towards reaching some manner of limited (/vr/ only) alpha sometime during 2022. Maybe. At least some video. I have other stuff to do first though, so don't expect much for long.

What I think really need is someone to write some Decorate code for me, because that's the shit which challenges me the most, I can generally make, source, or put together the graphics and audio assets which I need, and do simple code quickly, but man...

EEEEEUUUUUUUUUGGGGHHHHHH

Honestly though, some terrywads can be funny at times. There was a beatable map with some really cool architecture and custom enemies, but several fake doors lead to a terry trap so you'd better save often. Anyone remember the name? I'm pretty sure Aquarius199 played through this one. Also I kek'd at a map where the player activates some cool door with Half-Life sound effects, only to get raped by bunch of "fucknoses" that emerge out of it.

Vanilla could always load multiple wads like sourceports do. Every iwad lump can be replaced with a pwad but sprites in particular would require replacing every sprite in the game to prevent crashing. To avoid copyright infringement and big file sizes people would use deusf to take the spites from their iwad.
For some time people thought the same was true for flats but you can get around it.

Playing Realm of Pathoris mapset for Heretic. While it is a bit too crowded for my taste, it plays well with the Hunter (from Wrath of Cronos). Cosplaying an english longbowman with with 100 pound bow, who is always low on magical arrows and mostly uses normal arrows. On place with multiple iron liches in narrow rooms was quite fun when it is impossible to dodge their hurricane attack and you are flying up and down across the room most of the time.
