"Game overs" should not exist in home console games. They were only a carry-over from arcade games designed to eat quarters. There's no reason to make you restart the entire game because you made too many mistakes.

So stop being lazy and make more levels/content instead of artificially extending the game's play time by forcing the player to keep restarting it.

Who says game overs have to take you to the very start of the game?

the objective of the game isn't to reach the end, the objective is to reach the end within 5 lives. The way you;d approach challenges could be completely different under the context of infinite lives vs limited lives. Out-of-the-way secrets/items/powerups are no weighted against the risk of death, where as a game with unlimited lives has no such risk

Not every game has to have game overs of course, but you'd have to be pretty short sighted to think there's not a place in game design for it
