Nintendo used to scrub any instance of religion out of games, and localizations sometimes changed how the entire game looks to match a different audience.
Not being able to say what you want? Nobody has ever wanted to be made fun of, and groups have only gotten better at organizing. Part of why the video game community got so close to begin with was because of the bullying that united what was basically a niche. Nobody wanted that, and a lot of people even older than me helped normalize things, so that it can be like any other interest or hobby. What I want to say, based on my personal experience, is: you shouldn't be shielded from criticism, and that criticism may show in the form of jokes or simply by indifference. No one will write a scientific article about what you do wrong. Sometimes, they just mock you, making you think: "maybe I'm doing something wrong". Surprise, surprise! You might be doing it! Not always, of course. If they're being unfair to you, talk back, but don't sperg, don't seethe. Leave your message and be on your way.

So, even though I know it, it's not like I've found my light yet, and I'm feeling depressed for so many years now that even my depression feels different.
