I keep eating shit during the last race. It's like I can't catch up with the first 2 cars no matter how hard I try, what the fuck am I doing wrong, does anyone have any tips for this game

The trick is to never stop accelerating. None of the corners need you to break. You can beat it every difficulty with an automatic if you have a good racing line.

Heaven and Hell or Shooting Hoops?
Heaven and Hell is just generally hard. You need to get used to the whole track.
Shooting Hoops you should learn to drive through the whole thing with no drift. You don't need it to master the curves. Just steer as much as you can.
In general i can recommend to steer less and drift as good as possible. Each car behaves differently so your playstyle has to change

I beat Shooting Hoops while drifting, because with some cars have shit steering so you'll need to do it. The trick is to use manual transmission and keeping speed as high as you can.

You need to make your turns as smooth as possible. It's hard to do with a normal controller, but a Negcon is perfect. You can save up to 0.5s per lap by being smooth through every corner rather than jerking the controller

Play manual and don't drift whatsoever. Shooting Hoops is a speed track, so hold down the gas and make perfect lines. Trust your car's cornering ability.

Huh??? The final race of R4 is the easiest race in the entire series, literally just drive in a straight line, oval courses tend to be easy (except for Rage Racer's because of the terrible digital steering)

You dont need manual either.
Automatic is all I ever use and I blazed it easy, again, just drive. No braking, no drifting, just drive.

R4 is too easy.

You can do the Lizard D.R.T extra trial by choosing any of the unlocked Lizard D.R.T drift cars. Same with the Assoluto D.R.T extra trial, just choose an unlocked Assoluto D.R.T car. You're probably going to want car 19 though from each manufacturer, since they're the quickest available for the trial

What the fuck are you guys talking about difficulty? For a second I thought all this time I had been shitting on R4 for no reason about its lack of difficulty so I booted the game up to make absolutely sure there was no hard mode, and sure enough there isn't like I thought.

Either way, Ridge Racer 4 is a cakewalk, automatic transmission or no. The final heat may take a couple of tries if you're just playing the game for the very first time, R4 was my first of the Ridge Racers and playing DRT it took me a retry or two, but that was it.

It's not like the other Ridge Racers (prior to RR PSP and RR6/7 made things even easier than 4) where you actually have to sit there mastering the course and your car of choice in order to proceed due to the physics being more unforgiving, and the opponent cars even more cruel in their own performance. In some races in Rage Racer and RRV you just can't make a mistake, period.
In RR4 drifting is so easy it's brainless, the moment you've drifted one corner you've drifted them all. The game allows you plenty of mistakes in your lines and there's allowance for wall bumps even in the final heat of DRT.

The Extra Trials are pretty tough but not impossible. You just need to steer ans drift even weirder than ever

The D.R.T extra trials are the only ones that require proper braking, since the cars are far too fast for the tracks. Once you get a feel for the appropriate entry speed for each corner the trials become slightly easier (although still challenging)
