What are your favorite color hacks? Just found Super Mario 2 DX and I'm wondering if there are any other good ones I'm missing

Not many of these, and they usually look bad. But this looks great.

>> No.8433426

Imo nothing compares to changing to custom SGB pallets for each world.

Since posting this thread, I checked out both "Super Mario Land DX" and "Super Mario Land Colour" and they both sucked, so I am inclined to believe you. I will at least post the link for this good one because it deserves it. https://cdromance.com/gameboy-roms/super-mario-land-2-dx-hack/

Any Genesis one looks good because devs always chose the most disgusting colors possible so there's nowhere to go but up

Would really like a colored Wario Land 4 but it plays great in b&w too.

Magic Coins it's alright but that great colored.

Pics is unfortunately a mock-up which afaik was never made into a full hack

Awesome, thanks a lot.

The FFL trilogy would look pretty cool with colors but I also like using the SGB for that

There are color hacks for gen 1, they don't look this good though. I'd bet that making those big trees more than 1 different color is more complicated than it seems too.

Maybe it's a meme, but the way every town has a different color palette in the original is very charming, would be neat if that was kept intact in a hack like this

Still waiting for the Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru one.

There are tons of them for gba although they're usually for snes ports, which generally aren't best on gba anyway.

There is a decent and recent Metroid 2 color hack.
But honestly the original gb screen is much better for the game atmosphere.

I'm only familiar with the gen 2 conversion of gen 1 graphics. Looks good, but it crashed when exiting the victory road when I tested it years ago.

Is there any reason why these ports have such hideous washed out colors?

>> No.8433910

>>8433895
I would guess they increased the contrast to make things visible on the original GBA's non back-lit screen.

>> No.8433913

>>8433895
yes, a GBA has no light on it, it is a purely reflective display originally so they made these with that in mind

I would actually like to play a Pokemon game with muted, realistic colors.
Is there a color mod that does this with the GBA games?

For some reason I like when a 8bit port gets a hack to look cooler. e.g. Gradius II Famicom hacked to look more like the arcade version.

I'm just gonna say it. SML2 sucks balls. The framerate is awful. The control is bad and feels like Chinese Mario bootleg. Graphics are great but only in still shots.

Yeah, basically they used those weird, garish palettes to make it easier to see the game. Not a terrible idea at the time of the original GBA's release, but then the GBA SP model added a proper light, so people started to notice how fucked up the colors were.

There's at least one Zelda 1 patch that lets you play with the Link's Awakening and Oracle sprites.

>> No.8435540

kirby dreamland and that's it.
metroid ii would be great but they still don't fix samus visor and for whatever reason the author decided to not fix the palette of the ending picture even though someone shared his fix (and later published it ad an addendum).
