Lode Runner legit felt like an arcade game. I had it for GB and I never ever got far. Even as an adult I do not have what it takes to beat that or Bubble Bobble games.

I've beaten Mega Man 1-6 and Castlevania I-III without cheating or save-states, but I can't beat this dumbass game

Maybe this? I’ve never beaten a level. I haven’t spent that much time on it though.

Summer Carnival ‘92 Recca also destroys me pretty quick

Dude I can't either. The game objectively isn't hard, it's just too tedious and crappy to get invested in.

its not that hard once you get used to its difficulty , Im really not a great player for these kind of games but after some hours I started to get deep into the levels, I need to replay it sometime soon since I never actually finished it

I know this won't make much sense, especially as this is a 15 minute run if you know what you're doing, but I've been playing this since I was a kid. I had an NES clone console, and a cartridge with this on it, and never got past the 3rd level, I recall making it to the boss fight, Mysterio, but always losing. Nowadays I've tried to pick it up again, for old times sake, and I can't even get to Mysterio. I feel that the one thing that makes it difficult is the short lengh, as it forced the developers to extend it artificially, and how did they do it? Simple, you have a single life, with a single continue, literally only a couple of attempts.

Maximo games were pretty easy some enemies were hard to figure out that's it for me on that game.
Ghosts n Goblins on the other hand is very difficult. Maybe the hardest game I've played. Played the NES version never completed it.

Gradius 3 arcade. It gives you very little opportunity to breathe, it is utterly relentless. This game will continually pressure you from all sides. Probably one of those games that enthusiasts of the genre can crack.

Well, the main antagonist is named Nightmare King for reason.

But seriously though, the main challenge of this game lies in Capcom's patented one-hit death spikes and wild enemy respawn.
Those fucking dandelion puffs are bane of my existence.

This has infinite continues and even a level select. Certain games don't have that luxury

It's just a matter of patience learning every enemy placement and what to do against them

I feel that the main thing that makes most retro video games difficult is the fact that many force you to go all of the way back from the beggining after dying too many times. Of course, just because you might have unlimited continues, passwords or even saves it doesn't guarantee you'll be able to beat it, it might still be hard, but at least it feels somewhat fair. Nothing feels worse than making it really far and having to start all over again, it feels especially cheap if you look up longplays and realize that an average run takes 30 minutes or less, because then it becomes clear that you being taken back to the beggining was a design choice made purely to extend length. I don't mind the concept of having to go back to the beggining when dying to many times, and it is fun seeing you getting better and better at the parts you're more familiar with due to replaying them so much, but the execution is important, if you're deliberately given few or no extra lives, continues or even health, then it's just stressful.
