anything that feels like a good hero's journey, like LotR
being called to action, traveling and discovering new things, looking back and seeing how far you've come knowing that you can't go back home, stakes and danger rising, making and losing friends, that sort of thing
as far as games go I'd say SotC was the closest I've got to that feeling, and Dragon's Dogma although it's not retro

strangely one of the only times a game gave me this feeling was fucking gta san andreas of all things, like when the bent cops drive you out of los santos and dump you out in the countryside and you find yourself driving a bike up a mountain in the mist etc. there's this sudden sense of being displaced and finding yourself in a completely different world.

actual fantasy rpgs, despite being ostensibly fictionally closer to this idea, never work this way for me. they're too fixated on autistically quantifying everything with stats and/or a constant heroic power trip which just slaughters any feeling of wonder. maybe morrowind, sometimes, a little bit.

Terranigma for the SNES
It's an action rpg game, I don't want to spoil the story but you travel arroynd the world, there are sectoons with enemies, dungeons, cities where you can stay at a hotel to save the game and sleep to recover hp, the gameplay is good and you can help people in the cities which will result in the cities progressing technologically.

LotR is not hero's journey. Only Hollywood makes monomyth stories. Contrary to what Campbell believed, nothing before his book used the plot, and the man is a laughingstock among scholars. Star Wars is monomyth for a fact because it's explicitly based on it, but of course LotR fucking isn't, not even remotely so. You can stretch it to fit because the model is so nonsensical it can fit, or fail to fit, anything if you have low enoughs tandards.

This not a small achievement, you obviously know something about DnD mechanics now. Myself, after finishing PoR and having great experience from it, I've barely finished CoAB with much less interest, being disappointed by a lot of roleplay features being cut and the game being excessively grindy and much more difficult. Dropped Silver Blades almost immediately, and had some good fun with PoD experimenting with various magic beyond fireballs. Eventually given in because of random encounters - it got too repetitive. That was 10+ years ago, recently tried CoK, but was unable to keep interest, it seems that I am too old now and having more fun from metroidvanias (that I've never played back then) than CRPGs. Going to replay PoR one day though. I wonder if you tried FRUA games, I remember, after the PoD, spending quite a bit of time on story-heavy FRUA games, the ones by Harri Polsa especially, where there were very little combat.

Hi OP, there have been many suggestions so far, have you tried something?
What is your favourite adventure game?
For me the best adventure games have been the 3D Legend of Zelda games. If you haven't tried them, just go with either OOT, WW or TP and give them a try.
For me they felt better at having a comfy adventure such as in that pic .
Other games I would recommend looking at if you are looking for a comfy atmosphere such as in that pic >>8430562:
Lost Odyssey
Simon the Sorcerer 1
Tales of Symphonia
Darksiders 1 (good Zelda clone, underrated in my opinion)
Star Fox Adventures (mediocre Zelda but often very comfy)
Syberia 1&2 (not the best point n click gameplay but I still loved the game due to its visuals and music)
Paper Mario on N64 and GC (don't know the others)

And depending on how you define adventure:
Rayman 2 and 3, 3D platformers in general, even Sunshine and Goemon's Great Adventure
Metroid Prime series, especially the first half of the first one, which has some of the best feeling of exploring different planets
Mass Effect
Sword & Sworcery
Tomb Raider games (I haven't played them)
Gears of War 1-3 campaign on your couch in split-screen with a friend, same with the Halo campaign.
Playing capaigns with a friend in split screen with a friend is usually great in general, it's said that this is rather rare.
BTW I don't recommend the Uncharted series, I played 1 and 2 and they were awful, little exploration, a lot of QTE and a lot of boring third person cover shooting with annoying enemy waves - I guess they saw of successfull Gears of War was and tried to copy it but the result is pretty shitty.
The Assassin's Creed games I have played, 1 and 2 never felt as proper adventure games, can't say right now why. The latter ones might be different, Blag flag sounds rather different.
