It's been a long time since I played it, and it ain't retro, but wasn't ZX on hard mode actually... really fucking hard?
I remember even normal mode being difficult compared to other Mega Man games of the time, and I remember hard mode being a huge step up from normal mode.
Just getting through the first level on hard mode gave me trouble.

Yeah, Megaman 1 really is in a class of its own.
The other games can be challenging to the uninitiated, and we could probably spend all day talking about which one has the most, but only the first game has that special brand of unforgiving NES fuckery.
You really have to know what you're doing.

If we knock MM1 out of the running because we all agree that it's the hardest, then I'd argue MM4 for second place. Until you get to the fortresses, anyway. Then it gets piss easy.

Proto Man, for the main cast.
Knight Man, for the robot masters.
