Is the retrotink 5x worth it? I'm not sure how I feel about the lack of HDMI input.

>> No.8422846

>>8422839
If you are concerned about no HDMI input it is clearly not for you. It does however do an excellent job scaling retro signals and the motion adaptive deinterlacing is great.

The RetroTINK is a history, look at the OSSC, Open Source Scan Converter, and yes, worth it.

I mainly want it for my ps2. but my monitor only has 2 hdmi slots and I dont want the retrotink to have to share with the ps3 and PC.

Anyone have experience using this with gamecube/wii? I'm curious if ti'll look better on my 4k than playing gamecube games through the Wii U at 1080p would (which is awful)

>> No.8422929

>>8422880
I believe you can downscale it with the retrotink. Or you could get something like the mcable that could make the image look better at higher resolutions.

The 5X is better than the OSSC

>> No.8423006

>>8422847
The 5x Pro is considerably better at handling interlacing and resolution changes on-the-fly (Chrono Cross/Dino Crisis etc.), is more feature rich and from experience produces a better image. Both out of the box and dialling in setting. If anything I think the OSSC has been superseded by the GBS Control in that price range.
>>8422856
Works great with PS2 and component cables. Even has excellent pre-sets to handle deinterlacing. Get a cheap HDMI switch or AV receiver if you have limited HDMI ports.
>>8422880
Gamecube and Wii via component cables look infinitely better than the scaled output from Wii U's HDMI. Modded Wii + Nintendont + decent component cables (and scaler) is the ideal way to play the whole library imho.

no configuration needed and minimal lag (0.25 to 1.25 frames according the documentation).
for the lag alone the old 2x is still better, but compared to the framemeister it's better.

If you want HDMi input wait for the OSSC Pro or PixelFX Morph. Both are gonna be feature equivalent to the Retrotink (1440p, Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing, fast resolution change handling, etc) + more. Both of them will have HDMi input.

>> No.8423705

Do any of these things downscale interlaced signals to 240p?

>> No.8423706

>>8423539
Yeah, just do this OP. We're basically reaching a point anyways to where upscalers are basically producing the same quality results anyways. Love my 5x, but if its HDMI input you want you're better off waiting.

>> No.8423749

It's not worth it. Best option if you're willing to dirty your hands is the gbs-c. Otherwise I'd consider the ossc if you can handle the hard resolution changes.

i cant say for certain, but probably not
generally for PC to 15 KHz CRT output, you need VGA and either custom drivers for Windows like CRT_emudriver for AMD cards or Soft15kHz for nvidia cards, or custom modelines for linux
AND you'd need a VGA to component/composite/svideo converter, the best/cheapest of which i know of here:
component: https://www.ebay.com/itm/174166352619
composite/s-video: https://www.ebay.com/itm/174151197805
i dont think the laptop would work unless it has VGA output, but i think you can add a VGA port to the raspberry pis. they use linux so you could set custom modelines

>> No.8430359

>>8429486
I love the 5x, but if you're happy enough with a Framemeister, you probably won't have to shell out another few hundred when it can still upscale composite/S-video content just fine I think. It's just another good all-in-one solution for those that missed the boat on the Framemeister originally.
The fast resolution switching isn't just exclusive to the 5X either, it's common in other Retrotink products, and even the GBS-Control, too.

It was instrumental in streaming Silent Hill off real hardware this past October. You might lose signal quality converting HDMI into the device. Checking Amazon, there does seem to be a lot of HDMI to component adapters for cheap, but I have not tried those.

>> No.8432228

>>8422839
No, it's not worth it. I'll be worth it once it is able to downscale 1080p/720p/480p to 480i.

>> No.8432504

>>8431626
The 2X Pro offers support for component, composite, and S-video. It line doubles resolutions like 240p/480i to 480p, has low if any lag, and it has support for a smoothing filter and fake scanlines. That said, the scanlines are kind of terrible and darken the image.
There's a cheaper model though called the Mini. It doesn't have component inputs or artificial scanlines, but it basically does everything the other models do.

There are cheap adapters on Amazon that can do that already. I use one with a firestick running at 1080p and use Kodi to correct the aspect ratio and it looks good
