I really tried. I heard everyone is calling it a classic and one of the best games ever made.

But I HATE, and I mean DESPISE the battle system. You cannot walk for 15 seconds without some shitty Level 1 enemy attacking you. It always plays the same animation and the same music.

I started three times already but rage quitted after half an hour.

I don´t want to play the remake and wait for the other parts to get released maybe in 2-3 years.

Does this ever stop? How does one play through the game like this?

Managing random battles is a part of the gameplay - you're SUPPOSED to figure out when to fight and when not.

You can run from battles and take the risk of a difficult boss fight. You can beat the whole game at very low levels, so maybe you want that challenge. Later on, you can get the Enemy Away materia, to really fine-tune how much you battle. Of course, some people fight every battle and get really over-leveled. Complaining about it is pretty journalist-tier.

Now, you could also play the game in Duckstation and fast-forward through random battles, but then you're sure to be over-leveled.

>> No.8421036

Assuming you don't want to just run:

Buy 2 more Lightning Materia in Sector 7 and just have everyone spam that. It's much more powerful than attacking at low levels and more often than not enemies in Midgar are weak to electricity, especially bosses which are mostly robots. After Midgar, most enemies are weak to wind, but that's hard to take advantage of, so you're better off learning Matra Magic from the Sweepers right outside Midgar and having high Magic characters like Cloud and Aerith spam it. This usually wipes out entire groups in one shot even if you're underleveled.

Also, this isn't one of those games where bosses just can't be statused; many of them can be poisoned or even stopped. Choco/Mog and Aerith's Seal Evil can stunlock bosses for 3/4 of a fight sometimes.

If you don't like random encounters, old school JRPGs probably aren't for you.

That said, there are usually ways to reduce the encounter rate or to make the random encounters extremely effortless, especially in a game with as free-form a battle system as FF7. I know there's a Materia you can win from the Chocobo Races (which you unlock relatively early on) that, if leveled up, will reduce encounter rates by 75%. If the encounters are the only thing that're turning you off from the experience, you could stick it out until you can do the Chocobo Races and dedicate a bit of time to getting that Materia. Given how easy FF7 is, you might even have more fun if you do a low level run like that.

I played this game on emulator with an 8x speed button. In every town I just bought upgraded weapons, mashed circle in every fight until it was won.

It can't be stressed how tedious and mindless the game is. There's like 1% of encounters where you can stop mashing circle because there's some kind of gimmick or the enemies are more vulnerable to magic, but otherwise it involves absolutely no thinking.

Some other super-low-effort shit:

Once Matra Magic starts falling off, use the first-tier summons instead, which don't have particularly long animations. Around this time the game will start introducing more gimmick enemies like the Matroyshka doll things that take forever, just run from shit like this. Enemies during this time are often weak to fire, but many of the bosses and stronger enemies like Dragons absorb it, so beware.

When you fight the Materia Keeper (who also absorbs fire; don't use Vincent's Lv1 Limit) in Mt. Nibel, make sure both Enemy Skills are equipped so you learn Trine, which is semi-missable. It's both strong and cheap, and it's lightning element. Things tend not to be strong or weak vs. lightning in mid-game so it's pretty safe to spam outside of the Wutai area (where you can't use your Materia for most of it anyway). This is also true of Jenova-Life and the Aqualung skill (which you can learn earlier using an obscure method but it's not worth going out of the way for), though more things resist water later on.

In Gaea's Cliff, an enemy called Stilva can teach you Magic Breath, which is far more powerful, if costly. The drawback is that if an enemy absorbs any one of the main three elements, it'll absorb Magic Breath as well, but this is surprisingly rare, in fact it's most prevalent in that area you learn it thanks to so many ice enemies.

Other random tips:

* Don't bother using Haste and Barriers at the same time unless you're using Big Guard, the upkeep is annoying (Haste makes Barriers run out faster). Just choose one or the other.
* Cait Sith's Transform Materia is really close to learning Frog, which is nice if you're doing a fast/lower-level playthrough where your Materia are leveling slowly. When you get Added Effect you can make a setup that works well for encounters with lower numbers of mid-tier enemies, and add shit like Counter as well.

>> No.8423841

>>8423772
* Early game has most of the bosses that need long-range, so always make sure everyone has that option.
* Don't waste your time with single-Materia gimmick builds (linking a bunch of the same Materia to several different support Materia), these aren't worth it until endgame.
* Don't blindly go for higher Limit levels, check what they do and think about whether it's worth the longer charge. Vincent's are nuanced and can be ineffective or even outright detrimental against the wrong enemy.

That's about it for zero-investment tips.

also: Added Effect doesn't care if you've learned all the spells in a list (which is nice once you get Contain), I mentioned the Transform thing in case you actually want to cast it (since AE is unpredictable).

>have to brake to make the turn
>"WTF????? IS THIS BAD LEVEL DESIGN??? ARTIFICIAL DIFFICULTY??? WHY SHOULD I SLOW DOWN WHEN THE OBJECTIVE IS GOING AS FAST AS POSSIBLE???? WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS GENRE AGAIN??"
This is how braindead you sound. I hate people who are against diversity of genres and approaches and want every game to be the same. You guys are the reason why gaming sux now.

You don't have to grind in 7 that I recall. Been a bit.

yea but if you run away from every fight youre probably going to get fucked by a boss sooner or later. bahamut scales with yunas attack power so aslong as you can get her onto auron's grid you can rape pretty much everything.

You don't have to brake through turns in non-sim racers.
JRPG game design is objectively bad. It limits choice, limits gameplay and quest design structure, limits character progression, and even limits plot design.

either bad bait or actually retarded, i guess Wipeout was actually a sim this entire time

either way no (You)'s for (You), fagboy

I didn't say run away. You need to at least fight things as they come. That's not grinding. Running away is for when you are going to lose the fight, not avoiding a critical portion of the game.

Random encounters have their roots in DnD, where the DM randomly tosses enemies at you. That's the point. In a good JRPG, the random enemies are sometimes real nasty fuckers intermixed into weaker ones, like in the Ice Cave in FF1.

>I will never understand why people "really try" to "love" a game.

People sometimes would like everything from the presentation to the story but wouldn't like the gameplay. They give the game a chance because of everything else.

This.
If you want a game with absolutely relentless random encounters, go play phantasy star gaiden.
You will never complain about it in other games ever again.
