Was MGS1 the first English dub where they actually gave a damn?

PS1 dubs of any passable quality were rare (I'd imagine most games would have skipped them entirely if SCEA wasn't a bunch of dicks)

MGS1's voice acting was more wooden than The Last of Us.

The late Kan Tokumaru voiced 5 different roles in the Darkstalkers games, but Bishamon was where his acting really shone through. Also of note is that Darkstalkers was Capcom's first game to use professional voice actors. Before that they had random employees do the voices, to varying degrees of success.

There really wasn't a lot of good englishvoice acting examples in the 80's and 90's, most of them had that cheesy anime dub quality to it. Arguably Snatcher was one the first to have decent voice acting, but by today's standards it still sounds cheesy, albeit I find it really charming.

The late Tony Jay voiced Megabyte. Tony was fucking awesome in a bunch of games and cartoons and a bit of live action. David Warner has done games and cartoons and a crapload of other stuff. Look him up.

Except we do. We love how each race has a very distinct voice (Jeff Baker Dunmer is amazing, but the rest are no sloutch), while hate the sloppy, lazy VAing in Oblivion and Skyrim (there were actually a few bloopers present in the unpatched Oblivion, just to show how little they cared). We also love the obscure context spefific dialog you will almost never hear outside of the construction set.

We also recognize that full voice acting is nonviable for many genres, requiring huge cuts to the text to work.
