What are some of the worst dungeons you’ve ever trekked through in an RPG. These can be ones that are extremely long and tedious; boring and simple, brutally hard or complete wastes of time. If it pissed you off, I want to hear it. Picrel is the world of Sloth from Shin Megami Tensei If… I swear after playing if I ever have to go through any kind of mineshaft in a FPS dungeon crawler again I’m going to go into a fucking coma. The worst part is that immediately after you finish it you get thrown into another lengthy, agonising dungeon full of teleport mazes and fetch quests. That back to back awfulness really dropped the game down a few points, which sucks cause I was really liking up to that point

Pretty much all of SMT Nocturne, I hate the dungeon design in that game. Actually enjoyed the hellishness of Strange Journey however.

duncans factory from mother 1, its got a very big map with everything looking the same, high encounter rates, and at the end of the dungeun you have to have lloyd still alive to progress (who should be a brand new and quite weak party member at that point.) you have no revive spells yet.

Fortunately, I like the way they suck.

everything from Phantasy Star 1
the first person perspective made almost every dungeon a nightmare to travel

also some obvious ones like:
>Carina from Strange Journey
>the Crystal Tower from FFIII
one dungeon i don't see many people talk much about is Edea's castle from FFVIII, i kind of like it but i swear the whole dungeon is LONG af, having to switch your party around all the time is really annoying, some of the puzzles are almost impossible to figure it out without help and that god-forsaken piano man

Recently, Inside Girl's Mind and Cathedral from SMT1 (you can look them up on gamefaqs). Actually, I'd say all of SMT1's dungeons, to be honest. They're all extremely drawn out, there isn't a single puzzle and the items you get from treasure chests are mostly terrible (or you can't use them because they don't fit your alignment). It's a "dungeon crawler" with terrible dungeons where nothing feels rewarding. It wouldn't be so bad if the encounter rate wasn't so high, making the spell that reduces encounter rate mandatory, and it battles weren't so easy.

filtered by babies first dungeon crawler.
I can remember 90% of the dungeon layouts 30 years later still.

Breath of Fire had one shitty dungeon near the end that was invisible walls and walkways and there were tiles that rotate the screen to disorient you.
Dragon Quest 2 had a shitty one in Road to Rhone or something like that before the last castle.

I beat that game before I ever even considered mapping out a first person dungeon crawler, or even bothered looking online for maps. They're really straight-forward and easy to navigate.

>> No.8413982

The cathedral in SMT1 was pretty dull. Most the dungeons in that game, honestly
>>8412148
fucking loved Baya Malay though. The game had its share of generic caves, but that tower was awesome, multiple paths twisting and winding towards multiple goals on various floors.

the whole last leg of FF3 (crystal tower, eureka, labryinth) was the only chunk of the entire game that felt actually somewhat challenging. i fucking wish the rest of the game's dungeons were as brutal. i dunno what the heck you guys are smoking unless we're talking about the extremely slow DS remake where everything just feels excruciatingly slow instead

>> No.8414278

Fucker it was bad design. 1 save point with enemy formations that can blast you flat on the crystal floor. That's bullshit

I agree, it's really fun seeing how your team matches up to everything, and that buff up in power as you get more of the best equipment in the game. Felt good to go from slightly struggling to beating the shit out of the final boss. I think people just hate that you can't save while inside, which I would say is fair.
I liked the DS version too, but the PR version does a lot of good, even if it's a bit easier. Every class can mix well for the endgame.
Reminds me of Persona 1's Thanatos Temple, where if a teammate dies, they get sucked into the bottom of the tower, and you gotta get them back. Persona 1 has a lot of annoying dungeon layouts, but there's a certain fun to it.

Xenogears had two, which are part of 3 moments you'll want to drop the game at:
First is Kislev Sewers, which is a tedious sewer slog with high hp difficult enemies, a boss who is WAY above what you've been fighting up until that point, and ultimately the whole excursion winds up entirely pointless for the plot

Second is Tower of the Babil, which has mostly Gear battles and is a mostly vertical dungeon with platforming, and also random battles can happen mid-air and stop your jump momentum.

I never got beyond that and tapped out of Xenogears.

I think people don't mind the castle because it was massive but it had a ton of variety and stuff you could interact with, but it was still stuff you could realistically expect a castle to have. The crystal tower was brutal because you couldn't save when inside, meaning you had to go through at 3 different dungeons back to back, and the world of darkness was cool narrative wise but the actual dungeon was just needless padding.

lmao fucking casual
PS1 had the best first person dungeons from classic games, the scrolling was smooth, you could actually realize where you were going and the layouts were never insanely stupid nor the caves stupidly long like other games used to
the example you posted is so simple in its layout that you must be legit retarded to use it as one of the worst dungeons in jrpgs. try going through deceit in ultima you fucking babby

Second this. Not that the dungeon itself is particularly bad, it is a typical cheap grindfest with bullshit golem enemies. But geting there immediately after Tarrant and on a main plotline blocking quest - this was a huge "down to earth" moment. It is absolutely gamebreaking, clearly unfinished (half-done I'd say) and must not be on a main quest in the first place.
