Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games (this is /vr/, so any PC/6th gen game up to 2007 goes!). If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread reached its last bus stop: >8361278

>Interested in a series to get started with?
https://pastebin.com/Vke5tf9e

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

This thread we're introducing thread challenges. A track and game is chosen and people can challenge for times on it.
To keep with the winter theme with the coming Christmas season, We're racing on:
The Summit, on NFS3 (NTSC) for PSX.

>> No.8407059

Why don't you just list the games in the pastebin on the OP itself? Makes it easier to find the thread on the catalog too.
In fact, why not list every /vr/ racing game we've been playing in the OP in a single paragraph anyway?

>> No.8407060

>>8407059
At this point, yeah, adding a short paragraph that summarizes the main series we talk about here would be a bit nicer. Doubt we need a whole ass pastebin. If I bake next thread I'm going to.

Just for laughs here is the PC version without any of the assists on - as we can the more arcade nature of the PS1 version (at least in its default arcade setting, rather than simulation) has a significant impact on time. Hmm, I wonder how much of a difference turning traction control on has.

8407843

Since I just had to know here with have a PC run with traction control on. Give or take the differences in runs I would take TC on roughly makes the PC version on par with the PS1 version at default settings for lap times. The next test will be PS1 set to simulation which I will do next to complete this experiment.

As we can see sim mode in the playstation version is significantly slower. It is basically just an understeer mode anyway and never actually worth using. So i'm going to call this comparison done for now as getting into tuning autism is asking for trouble.

Ridge Racer has planes for days. It's great.
Other good stuff includes fireworks, hot air baloons, local fauna joining in (eg. birds, dolphins, etc.), tunnel sections and everything WRC Rally Evolved has done for rally games (people in the middle of the track, unpredictable nature/crashes blocking part of the track, your co-driver actually talking like he's a real person rather than a glorified GPS, etc.).

I've been enjoying Wipeout a lot lately. Always come back to it every few years, but I'm really on a mission to 100% gold every track/class this time. Just finished all the classes/teams on Wipeout 3, gonna do the Classic League on SE next.

I like Wipeout 3 the best, but I hear a lot of people say 2097 is their favourite. What's the reason, is it just liking the tracks better? Preferring the handling? The aesthetics?

For me, I thought 2097 was kinda light on content. Only has like 5 ships and it only took me maybe half an hour to unlock and complete the Phantom challenge, and I'm not sure what I was supposed to do after that other than just time trial I guess.

It has some really great tracks, Valpariso, Gar D'Europa and Penitia Park are easily my favourites. But on the other hand FUCK Odessa Keys and FUCK Spiskinane or whatever it is, and FUCK that other Phantom one. Those tracks are just a pain in the ass for the sake of being a pain in the ass, it ruins the feeling of speed and flow.

Wipeout 1 is a little primitive and I can't get into it properly. Is there any particular reason I should try to enjoy it compared to 2097 and 3/SE?

>> No.8419164

>>8419102
I don't know why but I've always found that 1 has a particularly different charm the other 2 don't have. Maybe it's the rougher feeling, or the more racing team looking ships.
2097 Feels like more refined 1, and 3 feels like the first modern wipeout.

360's Xbox emulator is very impressive. Doesn't support all games (Maximum Chase is unplayable slow) but it supports a lot and the improvements that come with 4xMSAA and 360's hardware upscaler are really nice.

WO3 or any incarnation of that game feel like boats struggling and bouncing around left and right. Like trying to push a around magnet with another magnet.
WOXL feels like the ships properly slice through air meaning the aerodynamics aren't fucked up. Turning left and right never feel excessively bouncy, only vertically (like Gare D'europa).

I finished the Pirahna Challenge for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I used to hate Odessa Keys but after practicing it to death I now think it's pretty good aside from the final corner. I just brute forced Vostok Island with the Qirex but I can see how with practice it would become smooth, but Spilskinanke, that track is just pure ass; the first blind tunnel is one thing, it has a relatively consistent approach at least, but the descending, pitch-black tunnel chicane that shoots you out perpendicular to the track is a nightmare.

>Wipeout 1 is a little primitive and I can't get into it properly. Is there any particular reason I should try to enjoy it compared to 2097 and 3/SE?
I find it far more satisfying to win 1 than in 2097/3; the walls are more punishing, there's much less of a weapon focus that 2097 and it's far more aerodynamic than 3. The sound effects help a lot; the engine sound isn't very loud and you can hear the wind rushing past you at high speeds, getting those perfect laps gliding through the tight tunnel sections and so on feels 'chef's kiss' as it were. Try the AG-SYS, it's by far the easiest to win with; the Auricom and Qirex airbrakes are so powerful that they require practicing every track excessively and the Feisar is so slow that you'll struggle to place on Arridos and Silverstream.
