>why play a port of a game if you can just play the arcade version at home now

We need to address this line of thinking because it's short-sighted. SOMETIMES it's better to play the arcade version but usually that's only if the system it was ported to couldn't produce a reasonable facsimile. A lot of the time the home port offers features that make it a more complete experience than the arcade game, which for some reason doesn't enter the conversation.

Although for a game on console this game should have really included more than just the two arcade courses.

Mercenaries on Mega Drive is a good example of this. Includes a whole new campaign with different mechanics.

NES ports of arcade games are often pretty much a completely different game. See Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, Double Dragon 2, etc

The "accurate" ports on NES are greatly outnumbered by the propriety sendups. And that's not a bad thing

I will continue playing SFII Special Champion edition on Genesis when I have friends over! It's more fun to play on my crt that everyone can see than on my computer monitor.

Super Monaco GP on Genesis lacks the based superscaling but it gives you a career mode
