Have you ever used a strategy guide for a retro game before /vr/?

>> No.839954

My mom would never buy strategy guides or cheat codes magazines for me as a kid. So what I would do is I would look up the games I had while we were at the grocery store and she was shopping. I'd sit in front of the magazines and memorize everything I wanted to know. When I got Megaman X4, I remember seeing in the code books the codes to get Ultimate Armour X and Black Zero. Those codes are tricky, but I sat there and read them until I memorized it. When we got home a few hours later, I would write them down right away and then I never lost them. That way I got all the good shit without having to buy anything.

No, I never considered bringing a piece of paper with me, because at that time when my mom wanted to go to the store, she would just tell me to get in the car and we're leaving. Never knew where we were going until we were there.

It would be easier to name the retro games I didn't need a guide for.

I had a strategy guide for Pokemon RBY and I never used it.
I used the stickers and read it entirely on the way to my grandmother's house one time but never looked it up when I wanted to play Pokemon. That game didn't need a guide at all.

I also got a cheat guide one year from the school book fairs and used to look up cheats for DKC 1-3 for more lives. That was nice.

Warning, Non-retro:
The Kingdom Hearts guide saved my sanity during the dalmatian quests. Fucking dalmatian puppies.

I used them when I was young and my parents first purchased a computer. I really did it as the internet was a novelty at the time and I thought it was amazing I could get complete, detailed information in a couple minutes. More than strategy guides though, enjoyed finding hacks and glitches that I could induce to make shit crazy (Pokemon, I'm looking at you).

>> No.840000

Back before I had the internet and found gamefaqs, strategy guides were my best friend. I still have all of my old ones too.

>> No.840086

Yes. When the game comes with a strategy guide, I feel inclined to use it.

>> No.840091

The only guide I ever used was the one inside the manual for Final Fantasy 1, which only covers up to either Gurgu Volcano or the Ice Cave.

>> No.840101

Yes and every time it's a "How the fuck would I know that" because the game is no initiative at all.

>> No.840106

Do walkthroughs count? If so, then yes.

Oh come on man, tell me the truth. You never glanced at a Nintendo power to 100% a game? Some of those NES game secrets are fucking cryptic as fuck.

>> No.840943

I've often used the internet to find walkthroughs and such since the first game I every played.

I never needed a guide to BEAT a game. I just liked to get them as sort of a supplement; mostly to see what I missed.

I used to get them just to have, and usually didn't use them until I beat the game. I'd look at them for sidequest shit, mostly.

I got pic related when the game came out, even though it's a useless piece of shit, it's still cool to look through.

>> No.841514

Yeah I used a guide for Brave Fencer Musashi in some magazine because I was too retarded to read the instructions for Topo's Dance Party...which didn't help seeing how I kept pressing the buttons while she was dancing.

Oh fucking this.

My save file said 100%, but the lack of thr exclamation point on the level name taunted me that there was something I'd missed.

I'd normally just get strategy guides for all those "if you don't do this in the first 2 hours of the game you'll miss out on that important thing 50 hours later"

Oh did you forget to check the light switch in your room 37 times exactly then place the hamburger in the trashcan at exactly 7 minutes into the game? Well I guess you'll have to miss out on the true ending, the extra dungeon, the secret characters, and the best weapon in the game. Should have got the player's guide faggot.

>tfw trying to play this game without some sort of guide

People have watched me play this time and time again and still don't understand why it's among my favorite games of all time. I think most of it had to do with the understanding of the system you had to attain just to play it at a basic level.

The payoff was glorious however.

What?

I used them when I was little, but apart from occasionally checking an online faq if I'm really stuck, I rarely do anymore.

I begged my mom to buy me the strategy guide for Super Metriod. Due to the nonlinear nature of the game compared to other platformers I played at the time, I got stuck. Guess I was a dumb kid but at least I knew how to make Metroid crawl.

>> No.843604

I used them for rpgs and zeldas usually as a kid. Or gamewinners.com

Daggerfall.

Some of the later questions are literally near fucking impossible without some kind of a walkthrough.

I had to borrow some kid's video game magazine to figure out the password for the ghost ship in Super Mario RPG. The hints are so inane and vague, and to this day I can't beat that retarded maze room to get the clue.
