The best selection of games, what a time to be alive, what was it like boomers?

>The best selection of games,
Most PS1 games are shit and only a hundred or so experimental titles and some established series actually hold up. The prior and subsequent generations had far higher quality.

>> No.8387959

>>8387948
>The prior
No. SNES and mega drive had more shovelware and far more expensive games. Some snes games with custom chips were more expensive than n64 games.

>> No.8387962

>>8387959
Nah, the PS1 had more shovelware and scam games by virtue of just having thousands more games. But the good games of SNES/Megadrive were in established genres that still hold up, with mechanics that still make sense.

A lot of the PS1 titles that were popular, were really only so because they were giving 3D games to a new audience who had never seen it done right, and they don't hold up at all anymore. So regarding 'what was it like', it actually wasn't that impressive if you owned a PC, although the niche titles were truly great.

Magazines had loads of demo discs. Playing Tombi/Tomba! with my friend after school were memories I will hold highly. We also played a lot of Tekken 2, MGS, Crash, Soul Edge, Loads of others while watching Simpsons followed by Robot Wars followed by Malcolm IT Middle, followed by Buffy on BBC2 .

The struggles with early 3d invalidate a lot of it. For every Tombraider, SilentHill and RE that were able to make the cumbersome controls work, there's 20 games that are just worthless because they have nothing worthwhile to offer outside of a borked control scheme.

Keep in mind the PS1 had a boat load of shovelware too that clogged up its library. It’s just that the good games are really fucking good and a lot of people had one at the time. Same could be said for basically any console really

It took a while for the PS1 to catch on. It was new, serious, and kind of strange compared to the existing market (Sega, Nintendo). Games like Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, and FF7 were new experiences and once a friend in a group rented or bought any one of these games, the rest of their friends would follow.

That's how Sony did it.

I never got to experience the PS1 much (besides that one Contra game at a friend's house) until relatively recently. Was surprised at how there aren't actually that many good games in the West, even though the ones that do hit, hit hard. Japan's experimental bs is so fucking fun and interesting that it makes it one of my favorite console game rosters ever. Really weird, I know, but it's such a great console to import for. I'm probably just spoiled by handhelds, since the western PS1 lineup is probably more numerous than everything else that gen, but the quality is a bit inconsistent. Still like my SNES a little more, though.

If you break it down, that's very few games that hold up per genre and a huge amount of shovelware and just plain shit, especially compared to other consoles.

It was glorious enough for people in 2021 to be still seething about muh shovelware and muh didn't age well.
Bonus points if you're a third worlder with a shit ton of cheap pressed games from hong kong being sold everywhere, while your Saturn buddies lament the lack of pirates, and your N64 friends say PS is a poorfag console... while failing to disclose they had to buy a new console after a pirate cart and an adapter fried their previous one.
Only a faggot would fail to like this console.

Boomers owned atari or intellivision systems, but would've been familiar with racing games, street fighter or bushido blade on ps. To put it directly, hideo kojima is a boomer since metal gear is fundamentally based off pac-man, but no boomer could've designed something like tomb raider (although some must've taken over for toby gard).
