I have a sort of silly story to share about this game. There was a point where I felt like video games weren't fun anymore (dumb I know) I decided to play this game on a whim and was making fun of it for being a default/generic anime game. As I kept playing it I became sorta invested, and I was having a lot of fun exploring the new areas and reading all the funny dialogue. Bottom of the line is that this game is a mediocre action game, but it made me realize that a game doesn't have to redefine a genre or be perfect to get some enjoyment out of it. I'm glad I gave this game a chance because now I actually play video games again and have been having a lot of fun.

It aired in Tacoland when I was in Elementary school, I really enjoyed it. I pirated the 1080p Blu-rays and been rewatching it subbed lately, you can tell it either kick-started or popularized the "chibi for comedy moments" seen in Kappa Mikey or Teen Titans, but the show remains largely a blast to watch. I love the animation and character designs so much, as well as how substance of the story is a creccendo, getting better as it goes on.

The AU OVAs are great too, they aired here stitched as a movie. Would reccomend. Hikaru best girl.

People can rightfully shit on WD for their weird changes and dated jokes but releasing Rayearth was such a passion project for them I can’t possibly fault them. The insane shit they went through to get this thing out the door, like having to rebuild half the game’s code from scratch because Sega gave them a broken version of the game, along with having to deal with Sega’s turbo autism ‘we can and will reject any game we don’t like’ policy at the time is honestly quite impressive and they should be lauded for it. Granted it basically nearly bankrupted them but you could tell they were really really passionate about the game and getting it out there

I played the game looong before I ever saw the anime (or knew there even was an anime) and that back manual image always confused me since it shows Fuu with a giant sword she never has in the game. It wasn't until I saw the show that it clicked that the game changed her weapon for gameplay reasons.

>> No.8388998

>>8388976
That’s not really the fan’s fault. MM8 and X4 were printed in limited quantities for a system that was basically dead in the west at the time so copies were already scarce to begin with. The boom in Saturn collecting and the insane price gougeing for games that’s come up in recent years certainly hasn’t helped much. In comparison, you can get a copy of Saturn X4 in Japanese for like $30 (and with that you get a cool exclusive cover too). The same can be said for basically half the Saturn’s library except for sports games and extremely common stuff like Virtua Fighter or Daytona. In the case of Rayearth, it was the last released title for a niche, failed system based on a niche anime and released by a niche company. It was always going to be rare.

As a fan of the series I found this game a bit disappointing for how inaccurate it is. The story starts out okay but takes some odd deviations later, the world doesn't really look or feel like Cephiro, Fuu has the wrong fucking weapon, the way some characters behave and talk is strange (some of this might just be the shit localization). It is a very good looking game though, and fun enough to play but the final boss fights being kinda like a shmup all of a sudden was weird and underwhelming.
I enjoyed the SNES game a lot more even if it's simple.

Huh? I have never heard this word. And no, I don't have any idea what you mean - I know that Western-produced games have a certain style of dialogue, but I know nothing about modern day translations of Japanese games having any newfound problems specific to them. 2010s/2020s games are generally translated pretty accurately compared to what came before, unlike with 80s and 90s (maybe early/mid 2000s) anime and videogames, where it feels like the translators just got a brief one paragraph summary and ad-libbed everything from there.

Anyway, about Working Designs translations in general: they are very fun. They are also completely inaccurate. If you care about faithfulness to the source, they're bad. If you don't care about that and just want the product you're reading to be fun and enjoyable in its own right, they're some of the best.

>> No.8392071

>>8391698
The majority of the dialogue is faithful. The only localization changes are in the miscellaneous items and NPCs and whatnot in the background. Also the balancing is barely changed at all, anybody recommending an unworkable designs patch is doing it out of pure contrarianism because they know the company has a reputation of changing the games, though there's nothing wrong with the balancing at all in this particular game.

Despite Magic Knight Rayearth being one of the last Sega Saturn games to get released in the west in 1998, the Japanese version of the game was released in 1995. I remember Working Designs announcing that their localisation would be released in 1996. But apparently, they lost the source code for the game, and had to rebuild it from scratch?

>Yeah Sega had a HDD crash and lost a ton of data. There's a theory that House of the Dead and Panzer Dragoon Saga were hit in the same crash.

Oh, it was part of the same HDD crash that lost PDS and HotD? I guess that would make sense. I heard that they had to reverse engineer the Japanese version, through hiring some extra programmers. Which really did lead this game to being the last Westren Sega CD release, and this came out months after the system was officially discontinued. Making it hard to find. I have never seen a physical copy of this game, and have only played it through emulation. I have owned a few WD games in the past. Popful Mail and Vay for the Sega CD. Rented Lunar 1 and 2 back in the day for the Sega CD. I never had an issue with their localisations. Even with some of the weird US jokes. They did adjust the difficulty of most of their games. But Magic Knight Rayearth was originally designed for younger age groups, so it was made easier on purpose for the Japanese version.

> Long version: Working Designs rather infamously took two-and-a-half years to actually produce the US version of the game after licensing it, due at least in part to Sega losing some of the source code in a hard drive crash. Never fear, though - nothing could stop Working Designs from cranking up a game's difficulty!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Knight_Rayearth_(video_game)
> As written in the translation notes in the instruction manual of the North American version, some of the source code to the original Japanese version had been lost due to a hard drive crash. The missing code was completely rebuilt for the US version.

The Cutting Room Floor and Wikipedia both seem to point to at least a partial loss of the source code. I do remember seeing previews for this game in GameFan Magazine, where the devs said the game would be out by 1996. But it was a game that kept slipping in its release dates.

I did imply that it was completely gone. But then those articles I linked to said: partial. But it was clear that it set the game back in a in way. I don;t understand how it was partial? Also, image related is two different DieHard Gamefan issues. First one was from 1995, and the first preview images they ever had from the japanese rev. Second is from E3 1996, where apparently Working Designs showed off an early localisation. They had more coverage on the game than that. Previews, reviews of the Japanese and US versions.
