Hard question. I personally like the 2d games better, besides the two games on the DS they are all fantastic games. But i would have to pick Ocarina of Time because that's clearly the most significant game in the series still and not even Breath of the Wild's success managed to change that perception.

Came here to say this. You expect the spartan starkness of the first two by virtue of them being on NES but LttP feels empty in character compared to every other Zelda riding the "cozy ensemble of memorable NPCs" angle that Link's Awakening established afterward. Not saying it's bad but it feels strange in that regard playing it after any of the newer titles, especially because OoT retreads so many of it's beats but done arguably better. So LttP really is the perfect one to play first if not just the original.

Its absolutely OoT. Every single console zelda afterwards until BotW took so much from it. Zelda was defined by the item > dungeon formula OoT created for nearly 20 years, and the combat for the other games was taken directly from OoT until Skyward Sword came out. It also introduced Ganondorf for the first time, who is much more recognizable than Ganon and appeared in tons of games afterwards. The OoT Link design is the default when most people think of Link, or the Twilight Princess design which was extremely similar. Nearly every 3D zelda also has some plot references to characters or ideas that were established in OoT as well.

Breath of the Wild might take its place in time but we'll see. It hasn't had time to build a legacy yet since its still the newest Zelda, other than BotW link being in smash bros.

I will never understand why everyone drops to their knees and howls around Breath of the Wild's dick like it cums the elixir of life. OoT and MM had more rewarding exploration than this allegedly exploration-based game. There's nothing to discover but boring, same-y mini-dungeons, Korok seeds, and the same enemies copy-pasted over and over. The stamina wheel is like trying to move with a ball and chain around your ankle, and never should be activated outside of the climbing segments where it actually serves a function. The game doesn't incentivize action or reward you for going off and doing your own thing, even actively disincentivizing engaging in combat by making every item breakable. It's stretched so thin and feels so shallow.

replay the game, it was solid gameplay wise. some shit was bad don't get me wrong, the boss keys and harp minigame are awful, but it did a lot right desu. one of the best economies in the whole series, using healing items are in real time, the items themselves were mostly great, the dungeons are amazing, etc.
