5 is 5 jap, never came out in the US until they actually fixed the numbering.

What's even more retarded was that they thought bringing over Mystic Quest was a better idea than bringing over V.

Yes! Called Final Fantasy: USA in Japan, it was an attempt to get Americans interested in the RPG by making things simple.... You can see all enemies in the dungeons, and they do not move, just block your way most of the time...

There was no exploring on the overworld, you would navigate a map with linked points, similar to Super Mario World.

And if you lost a battle, you could try the battle again without getting a Game Over screen.

Not a whole lot of customization. You got several different types of weapons and armor, but not the varied choices like most of the older Final Fantasy games... To be fair, most Final Fantasy players rely on certain builds anyway.

Many people didn't like it... I thought it was fun.

But it was a good idea, because there was still quite a bit of ignorant anti-Japan sentiment, despite everyone playing OTHER Japanese games. JRPGs, despite being sired by Wizardry, were still too overtly Japanese, so Mystic Quest was cooked up as a low-priced entry-level game to attract people who would otherwise turn their noses up at Final Fantasy, Shining Force, or Dragon Quest.

I don't think so. Wizardry didn't come out on a western console since the NES. Other console ports of computer RPGs were often abominations. It's not like FF and DQ had much (non-japanese) equal competition on their home platforms in the first place.
Plus the lukewarm reception indicates that it wasn't exactly successful either.

They just wanted to sell it to a demographic as large as possible, people seem to take this simple fact as an insult for some reason.

Let's be honest, oldschool rpgs ain't for everyone, they're slow paced and have loads and loads of text.
