R8,9 & 10 needed a bit more solder
but if it works perfectly fine just leave it alone

keep at it
any job where you dont break anything is a success

I unironically bought a soldering iron and never used it.
First off, what mod is that?
Second,, what can I do to practice soldering? No, I'm not gonna mod my PS2.

>> No.8373812

>>8373794
Why would you mod your PS2? You don't need to solder anything to mod a PS2.

Watch these. Then order some practice boards. You need alcohol, wire, flux, solder and some desoldering wick.

have any old bits of wire?.. i've got a whole slew of old stereo wires.. just practice soldering wires to old pcb boards, light switches.. you'll have your soldering skills down the more you practice.. use good flux too, don't cheap out on that

No you don't. You can use FMCB with psx_launcher, or mechapwn. Hell you don't even need any softmods and all you actually need is some tape over the disc lid latch and a small wad of paper on the sensor button to do a hotswap

Solder Paste and hotair gun, iron for preheating

>> No.8378004

OP, it will work fine I'm sure but practice would be good. Solder points you generally want to look like nice "mountain" shape. Classic volcano outline with base peaking from the pad and up into the wire or leg of the component. Nice silver shine. Make sure your iron is hot enough, you heat the thing you are soldering to with the iron and not the solder wire and that heat will help it flow. Use solder with flux in it. Leaded solder is easier than unleaded unless you buy really good unleaded which no one does starting out. Adding flux to the pads first makes life easier.

Any modern soldering iron can do the job and will suit you to learn and use as long as it is a temperature adjustable one. A "soldering station" style that has its own transformer, temperature adjuster interface or knob and readout, interchangable tips for the iron, etc. can be had very cheaply now thanks to china clones and knock offs of good old models and even current ones as well as their own designs. You don't need to get a brand name iron if you're only going to use it once in a blue moon.

Avoid the irons that are just plug in to the wall types with no control unless it is free and all you have. I started on those and not even nostalgia would make me go back to it, only desperation if that was all I had left to use. They take forever to heat up and there's no control or feedback over temperature.

I never had good luck with soldering at this scale. Could never get enough heat to transfer to melt solder indirectly. I chalked it up to bad irons/tips. Might invest in a Hakko if I get back into it.

>> No.8384439

>>8384093
there's a budget soldering station that everyone seems to be recommending now, KSSGER T12, I think you can find them for around 80 bucks from china, or you could try to get an used hakko one. I bought the KSSGER one and it seems quite an upgrade from a regular cheap standalone soldering iron. I've been using on some diy projects and It has been a ton of fun
