You can use it for ocean, and have the stage be a quad based island. You can use it for clouds and have mountain tops coming up through it. You can use it for a desert and have quad based dunes. For many possible environments, it creates apparently infinite draw distance and saves a lot of quads

Saturn does proper 2D and is capable of 3D. PSX only does 3D and extremly limited 2D. Besides 32bit 3D games were fucking ugly even back then. Its not like they magically "aged poorly". They were always fucking ugly. Beauty is timeless.

Actually I rather like early 3D, for example compare Panzer Dragoon with the HD remake, original looks way better IMO. Early 3D has this nice mysterious quality to it, it leaves something to the imagination.
