Oh, and I should mention when I did get the USB adapter, you best believe the Sidewinder got relegated to being the second player controller I'd offer my cousin when he'd come over to play Tetris Attack or whatever I was emulating on ZSNES.

Take a good look. 6 face buttons plus a start button, versus 4 face buttons and no start or select button. Should be obvious which one would be better for emulation. I had to bind Start and Select to Enter and Shift on the keyboard. The older Sidewinder would've been so cash for MAME stuff back in that day for me.

No official DOS support. Sorta matters because it was a Win9x era pad. People still wanted to play DOS games then. A few DOS emulators like ZSNES specifically supported it, though. There's a hacky DOS TSR for it but it doesn't work with everything.
>just play DOS games in Windows
Several games needed pure DOS mode to play correctly/at all. Shit d-pad.

How versatile would this controller be for emulation? In theory, you should be able to reprogram controller inputs from any console as long as the "proportional d-pad" and "8-way POV switch" work in practice as dual thumbsticks.

These types of bundles were not all that uncommon in the PC world back in the day. Sometimes, just unsold inventory of gamepads that got bundled with some Capcom PC games. I know back in the day, I remember buying a package of three EA games, it was like NHL 98, Moto Racer, Madden 98 and a Gravis GamePad Pro for like $19.99.

PowerA makes some decent off-brand controllers, they're absurdly cheap a lot of the time too and mine has lasted me longer than any legit controller, so far no drift or damage bar the shitty paintjob scraping off.

Dreamcast controller is fine, good even, as is the Saturn 3D controller.
The N64 controller is shit though. Not because hurr how do I hold it, but because when you do hold it properly for the analog, with the center and left prongs, it makes your left hand further back than your right, which means you end up holding it tilted. Forward on the stick is no longer forward but Northeast-ish.

Idk if you’ve seen those mega man plug and plays they sell at t*rg*t but they also have 6 buttons and are hard wired into a box that only plays mega man 1-6. Maybe they’re super easy to hack or something? Baffling decision

It literally cramps your hand. Had it been wider it would have been a good controller.

>> No.8372684

>>8371417
Same reason why SNES had 6 action buttons despite most games only using 2-3 max. Because it's good to have the option when you need it. You can still use that six-button controller for 2-button games like mega man, but you can ALSO use it for other games too.

>> No.8372685

>>8369779
Agreed, N64 controller is fine. Hold it this way for 3D games and this way for 2D games, it's not a hard concept.

Dreamcast though, I'm ambivalent about. It's not a BAD controller per se, but it's just lacking. For one it simply didn't have enough buttons and could've used a left stick for camera/aiming in games where that mattered. And it's a travesty it didn't have six face buttons for all the fighting games. But more importantly than that, the issue I have is that it's just an objective downgrade compared to the 3D saturn pad. same basic design but with a far better d-pad and six face buttons. They should've just kept the saturn design for the controller

Everyone likes the IBM buckling springs, but the tactile and clicky space invaders switches were real good. Managed to get through most of X-Wing's difficult missions and the Wing Commander games with this when flightsticks were unaffordable.
