Spyro 2.

I was 10 years old and that's the game that made me the jaded son of a bitch I am today. I learned then and there that if you ever truly love a game, they will always let you down.

Oh nice, an SNES Mario game? Guess I'll give it a rental. Well shit.

If you can't get over the top down perspective you'll never like it, but London and GTA2 were a lot more fun than the original.

Much like the PS2 games, the first one was the blueprint, but really quite bland in it's own right. The other two take the formula but give it a lot more character.

90s gaming magazines were full of blatant propaganda.

I remember Official Playstation Magazine shilling every Tomb Raider with perfect scores, every Resident Evil, every Final Fantasy, every Tekken, etc. If it was a big name, it got big scores, and they would carry on talking about it like it was jesus reincarnate for like 2 months afterwards in the features.

Pretty funny looking back on it, but it's true the rental market saved a lot of disappointments. If only such a thing existed today...

MK3 is when they changed it to appeal more to the 12 year old power rangers fanbase,
with stage shows showing off fancy moves and colorful outfits.

MK used to be about the realistic violence, and the dark story.
but then it turned into Power Rangers, with silly fatalities which were clearly changed so soccer moms wouldn't complain.

DK64 by far, as soon as I heard the intro song and it was a dumb parody. I was expecting something like the snes games but maybe with 2.5 view but still in a similar style. I just thought it looked really ugly. Technically it is good but the artwork is ugly. I was told by someone at school that the snes games were ment to be on n64 but it was so good on snes they just did it on there, I expected the n64 games would have evenything they couldn't do on the 2d games. Even most of the reviewers at the time admit the graphics are worse but thats just the way 3d graphics are. I think they tried to make up for the plane graphics with lots of lighting effects in some areas. still meh. For months before this game came out I was thinking what awesome intro song will they do, downloaded the song from ign and was like ok what is this, I didn't get the humour in it since it was not supposed to be a joke game.

Jurassic Park was great. Or at least great at the time. You had to learn the levels because there was some bullshit that was not intuitive. Most of the time it was problems with knowing if you could jump down safely since it had fall damage. But fundamentally, it felt fun to move the character around and shoot stuff, so it was worth the trial and error to master the game. But that boat level was pure memorization. Constant death everywhere in that level.

Also playing as the raptor was some dumb fun.

This is the title i was most disappointed by i was hoping for more 2.5D or instead make the map smaller, utilize each Kong according to their ability and kind of have a cap on banana per level much like Diddy Kong Racing(which to me i was hoping for). But instead it had
1. Long levels, huge maps so spread out that it takes 4 to 8 minutes to reach the destination to realize, oh fuck i forgot Lanky Kong i will have to go back another 9 minutes.
2. Oh no i have to collect a lot of Golden Banana's and care about every nook and cranny to 100% the game for the true ending.
It literally tried to be Banjo Kazooie 2X mixed in with Donkey Kong mechanics. Two of the worst combinations in history. I swear Diddy Kong Racing was just the model Rare needed to go for but were fooled by the sells of Banjo Kazooie that they even did something similar with Banjo Tooie.

Yep and they took a simple combat system, memorable music's, and great characters and did a fucking 180 on all that.

To add salt to injury, two-player co-op was only added to Separation Anxiety, the worse game.

Dare I ask, as a borderline zoomer (27), what you thought of BotW? Did it feel more like a Zelda 1 sequel to you as someone who grew up with it?

Not if you bought it used on a random chance purchase.

Anon is mistaking "the novelty of playing any game in the 90s" was great with "any game I played in my childhood was great"

Hard to say. I'd resigned that a Zelda game like Zelda 1 is more or less impossible both with the other 35 years of the franchise to influence things, as well as a director/producer/supervisor who has admitted a game like it is not the sort of thing that appeals to him. There's a lot of elements in BotW I like and definately feel like Z1-- the exploration in the vast world and freedom to decide where or how you tackled things was ideal to me. I never even rode a horse since I just enjoyed doing it all on foot. The action had moments that I liked, and the tenseness when those rapid strings signifying a Guardian saw you were exciting and fun to me. The dungeons, of course, were the game's weakest link. I never saw Zelda as a puzzle game, so the series shifting to a puzzle focus... and the dungeons and shrines are where BotW dumps all its puzzles. I liked how there was more freedom to solve them, but the dungeons are just boxes to solve things with the most harmless of enemy encounters. Of course, none of those critques apply to Hyrule Castle, which I think people universally consider the game's most successful dungeon. Overall, it and Hyrule Warriors was some of the most fun I've had from the series in a long, long time. It's hard to say if Aonuma and Nintendo will keep this good will they've earned with the sequel-- with how they've ported a bunch of games that aren't anything like BotW to fill the gap certainly doesn't instill hope. But overall, not retro.

This or Final Fantasy 7. In both cases, a really slow and shitty-looking 3D sequel in a 2D series that looked much better as 2D. And in both cases, they were waaaaaaaay overhyped, with people still giving them sloppy blowjobs of praise.
