ITT: games and things in games that are strange, bizarre, unique, esoteric, offbeat, eerie etc, preferably in a comfy appealing kind of way but anything that makes you stop for a bit goes

Always thought the dense pre-rendered jungle with dark shadows in DK was kind of creepy and dangerous feeling but in a nostalgic way, a far cry from the modern safe, soft, and cartoony graphics in DKCR and DKCTF or modern Nintendo games in general

On the surface the PS1 Spyro trilogy seems like a generic kids' fairytale cartoon type of thing, but when you get into them the games are full of strange muppet-like characters, esoteric locations, weird missions, haunting music etc

It's not scary but it's certainly memorable and a more unique personality than most other mascot games and later Spyro games

The first game is probably the most haunting since it's the most barren, but the hub worlds in 2 probably fit that bill the best. Especially with how they eventually end up as lifeless, empty forests and shit since the NPCs disappear as you progress. Also how often people fucking die in 2's intro and exit cutscenes.

i remember playing adventure 2 at night. i loved trasure hunting levels so i was having my fun, plus the music is 11/10
then i decided to stop for a second and look at the background...
i began to feel uneasy. i shouldn't have lookd at the giants pumpking. i then tried to continue playing and avoid thinking about them... but i couldn't. just like what happens after you watc a horror movie, these spooky pumpkin didn't leave my head and so i had difficult to sleep
especially since i have this fear for giant things (megalophobia?)

something similar happened with the dark chao garden. it's literal hell but children version

Neverhood and EWJ are embodiments of that.

Earthworm Jim 1 is a significantly darker game than a sequel, with some mildly spooky vibes here and there. But second game is also gets a bit eerie at times.

Neverhood just gives you a sense of "anything goes" when you go exploring that bizarre world. That quiet whispering and Klogg's random mad laugh in one part of the game made me startled when I played for the first time

Iirc it's the only chao garden out of the three where you can actually die (by drowning in pond, the water level here is enough for you to submerge). I noticed that as a kid, but I didn't know if it has some intentional meaning.

>> No.8366318

>>8366250
Your memory is shit anon, sorry. You can't drown in any chao garden. Your chao might not come back after evolution though if it spends all of its time in the water without an adequate swim stat, because it lived an unhappy life, but that's true of all the chao gardens.

I was talking about DC version which is the only version I've played. Maybe it depends on character's height. Tall guys like Eggman obviously can't get drown anywhere, but Tails can.

I just remember that I specifically tried to do this in every chao garden and only succeeded in Dark one. Can't remember which character I've picked though.

It gets really creepy and dark out of nowhere. Like how if you mess up protecting the farm and Romani gets abducted by aliens. It even goes the extra mile by having her sister be depressed about it the next day acknowledging that she's gone. On a CRT the creepy atmosphere is amplified.

I really love the zones behind Fable's Demon Doors. These lost pockets of history, rarely touched by the troubles of the outside world.
This soft tune would play that performed a balancing act between unsettling and comforting, and left me feeling as though I shouldn't be there, but also should stay for a while.

Feels kind of out of place, almost. Granted, it's been maybe 15 years now, but I can't say that I remember any ghosts in the Lucky Luke comics or cartoons.

Those graphics are very good though, appropriately stylized to look like the series.

Not sure if it counts, but some scenes in the original Metal Gear Solid have stuck with me for a strange reason. For a brief amount of time, it's as if the game really succeeds in establishing a certain tone about war and life and death to create a sense of gravitas over the whole game and it's just great. Unlike in the later games, we don't know much about Snake here or what he thinks as a person, so he's a lot better at selling the idea of a grim super soldier with a pessimistic outlook on life, before the plots of these games got too wacky and Snake became a fan favorite. It was crazy because I didn't actually believe a game could be taken seriously like that. I guess I was right mostly. Games have tried to be taken seriously way more since then but it rarely works. This game is one of the exceptions to me.

I dunno how to fully convey it. The game felt really "adult" back then.
