I think it’s fair to say Sonic was still a major brand at that point. Still is today. But the Sonic vs. Mario debate stopped being a legitimate arguement after the death of the Dreamcast, if not earlier. They’re not on the same level anymore. Sonic isn’t the mascot for an empire, it’s just a particularily well known series.
