Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games (this is /vr/, so any PC/6th gen game up to 2007 goes!). If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread was dooded: >8275361

>Interested in a series to get started with?
https://pastebin.com/Vke5tf9e (embed) (embed)

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

>> No.8361281

Why don't you just list the games in the pastebin on the OP itself? Makes it easier to find the thread on the catalog too.

What are the best looking games on PS2 except for GT4? (because it BTFO of everything else on the console)
So far I think these look decent for the hardware:
NFSU2
NFSMW
Motorstorm Arctic Edge
Juiced 2 HIN
Midnight Club 3 remix
Burnout 3
Burnout Revenge
Burnout Dominator
TOCA 3
ATV offroad fury 4
Flatout
Flatout 2
Test Drive Unlimited

Honorable mentions:
Driver parallel lines

Please suggest any sort of racing games you think went a step further exploiting the hardware.

I've been playing through the Ridge Racer series and just got to V today.

It took me like 3 hours of retries but I finally beat the first Standard Cup on Hard, and man that felt so accomplishing.
I was on my last chance and had been racing a perfect race in the Kamata, I had been on the first place driver's tail since the hairpin on lap 2 but just didn't have a powerful enough car to make a pass until we got back to the hairpin turn on lap 3 and I made the cleanest fucking drift pass you can make.

My heart was racing because of how easily all my attempts could have been for naught and I would have had to start back from race 1 if any part of my drift was even slightly suspect.
That was just so fun. They don't make arcade racers like this anymore it feels like.

Ridge Racer V is my favorite so far, albeit I'm only 3 hours in. I just wish PCSX2 didn't produce garbage textures on the cars when upscaled.

Ridge Racer was bad, Revolution was better for the first course but still bad and then the last course to me was terrible.
Rage Racer was GREAT but it felt like you could cheese it too easily due to the nature of being more open-ended with you car selection and upgrades. And the AI tended to get in the way too much.
Ridge Racer Type 4 is GREAT and the most technically and stylistically impressive of all the games so far, but too damn easy, even with the American team, once you adjust to the physics the game is just a cakewalk.

But RRV just feels like a step up in perfecting the arcade controls, physics, and overall difficulty and it comes real close to being as stylish as RR4 while being as graphically impressive as I can expect from coming out so close to the PS2's launch.

I think that nitro has no place in Ridge Racer games. You should overtake rival cars by choosing the best racing lines and nailing perfect drifts, not by pressing one magic button. RR7 balances this a little with rivals using nitro quite often too, but it's still not what vintage RR, which is inspired by touge racing, is about.

Extra trials are available at the bottom of the main menu once you finish the main Grand Prix. They allow you to unlock car 20 for each team/manufacturer combination.
The D.R.T. ones are especially tough since 3 out of 4 of the trials are af Heaven and Earth, and you basically need to use the fastest car available (car 19) in order to win. These cars are far too fast for the track, and will understeer like crazy if you go into corners even a little too hot. Prepare for plenty of wall bumps.
I think D.R.T. Lizard and D.R.T. Terazi are the most difficult.

That's what I mean by self-extracting, it's just that I've been warned that a few games can end up bricking the C partition if unpatched and I don't have a list of which and am also a lazy coward. What I did end up doing was extracting the .iso contents, mulleting them back into a minimum size .iso, burning that to a disc, and running that through dvd2xbox to patch it juuust in case. Worked out well.
And while waiting for different processes to finish I did find out you can snoop around in the data files using PowerISO and renaming .cvm to .iso, so I can only assume it's simple enough to swap the girl's files in the NTSC-U data and rebuild as .cvm's to have an uncensored translated copy. But figuring out which files they are is beyond my effort quota at the moment.

Is it just me or are first 3 NFS games much harder than the rest?
I only tried the PS1 versions so far but the rubber banding in these games is truly infuriating, you can drive flawlessly and still lose somehow because the game has annoying rubber banding so you can never run too far ahead of your opponents but if they overtake you you will almost certainly not catch up. That means that there is almost no difference between begineer and expert difficulty.

In High Stakes they made the game much more fair but the later stages are still pretty tough.

Honestly I like both versions of High Stakes, the PC one obviously looks sharper and has better draw distance and frame rate but it also has more detailed damage system and longer better career mode. Also it supports mods so you can add lots of different cars.
However I still slightly prefer PS1 because the handling model is more realistic and just feels better despite being less grippy.

It surprised me how significant the difference can be even in a well calibrated screen. It certainly made made the more muted parts (like empire city in NFS III) much less harsh in the contrast due to reduction in saturation. It helps that in my case AMD offers effectively a 1-click method at driver level so it can even apply in emulators.

The game needed a soundtrack - a popular band had been contracted to do the music, but pulled out when they could not agree to monetary terms. Steve and Rob offered up the services of Bottomdawg, and the other band Rob played drums for, The Have-Nots (now the V-Town Have-Nots). The two bands offered to do the soundtrack in exchange for Playstations, Nintendo 64's, and several copies of the game once released..."

I typically ride Rage Racer's big dick more than Type 4, but RRT4 really does take the cake for best /vr/oom intro. It's not just cool music playing to cool replay cameras. It's telling an actual narrative, pushes the emotional buttons, real cinematography on display, gives you a glimpse of Reiko as an actual person, music is made exclusively for the intro, it's got feet, it's got sax, has a fantastic climax. The last 15-20 seconds is pure big dick energy. Actual 90s CG intro kinography hall of famer. Posting it because it's not like Type 4 intro hasn't been posted for the 1000th time:

Yeah, exactly. There's the R34 engines but no body.
This also happens with the S2000, and there are some chassis that could've belonged to BMW 3 series (BM3, BM6 engine iirc) and a "Forth WCR", which was presumably a Ford Focus rally car or something. Probably others I forgot as well.

As long as it doesn't throw you into walls it's fine imo. At that point in the story I was running the testarossa engine with as many turbos attached as I could and by the moment they all finished spooling the car warp speed-ed into the nearest guardrail.

Well my first and obvious thought is every snow track in the first 5 NFS games since they feature it. From there I might head for lesser known titles (especially ones that have cheats to unlock everything since a full playthrough is not the goal) like Speedster and supersonic racers. After that it will simply be trawling through my memory of games I know have snow tracks (ooh rollcage does, that is another good one). I think the last game I will play will be smuggler's run 2 for that cool russian winter. if I can brave it I will actually bust out my disc copy of cool boarders (the first one) but man that game is 90's radical.
