This is a bit wrong. You enter Worlds A-D regardless after 8-4. Warping only means you don't pass through World 9 in-between.

And on the FDS, you had to beat the game eight times to unlock Worlds A-D, so All-Stars took a lot of the work out of that.

We've been over this anon. It's a mix of the Players(readers), Pro's(game counselors at NP), and Dealers(what retail says is selling). Pro's really liked Zelda 2 and it stayed high on their list for a long time. Also, there was some re-releases of older titles around this time. Both Zelda and Zelda 2 got re-releases along with Metroid, and probably a few other games. I didn't get my copy of Zelda 2 until the re-release of it.

Mario & Wario - Nintendo(was developed by Game Freak) (SNES)
A Super Famicom action-puzzle game with Mario and Wario. No fan-translation exists, but I'm not sure if one is even needed.

Thomas The Tank Engine - THQ (NES)
THQ published two different Thomas The Tank Engine videogames around this time period. This one here sounds very similar to the one that was released on the SNES. Asterix - Electro Brain(I think it was the Bit Managers?) (NES)

This wasn't even the only place it was advertised. One of my most clear memories as a kid was waiting with Grandpa in a sitting area at K-mart waiting for Grandma to do finish shopping. There was some kind of store pamphlet previewing upcoming games that he read to me while we waited. I remember Mario and Wario's preview blurb ended with something like "but this time, Mario has a bucket on his head!". Then Grandpa said "wow, that sounds like a really great game. We'll have to get that one", so the game's always stuck in my head because of it. Even though it never actually came out.

And we've been saying for years that Zelda 2 was well loved back when the NES was alive. It being hated was the verdict of all the zoomers who grew up with OoT who didn't like it since it was challenging. Same thing with TMNT. All the post-2000 sources say it's garbage, most people who played it back then liked it. Games didn't sell millions of copies on hype alone back then, most people rented first. You only bought the game if you liked it enough after the rental. Zelda 2 and TMNT both sold 4 million copies, putting them both in the top 11 of most sold NES games. You don't sell 4 million copies in the late 80's and be hated. The only NES titles to sell more copies than Zelda 2 was the 3 SMB games, Zelda 1, Tetris, Duck Hunt, and Dr. Mario. Zelda 2 was one of the few "NES Classics" to get a reprinting late in the NES's lifespan, because it was that popular.

Go back and read the Player's scores in the older issues. TMNT was popular among players, not so much with the NP game counselors. That's why TMNT was the 11th best selling NES game of all time, beating out every Mega Man title. I'm probably forgetting a lot of things. Sure they came up with some things to make up the blanks (and in some cases it feels like they could have happened in the show like the mutated frog and armadillo enemies; or some crazy dude using a chainsaw, in fact maybe these things happened and I'm just not aware) for a game made in 1989 it respects the source material a lot more than one would expect. The cutscenes are particurlarly great.

I think this is the most successful instance so far of the current incarnation of Nester. Usually one page doesn't seem to be enough room to set up Nester in a game world, deliver several jokes plus a half-baked gameplay tip, and still somehow tell a complete story, but "Nester meets fellow explosives shopper and immediately incites mutually catastrophic shopping cart crash" is simple enough to actually fit, yet funny enough to not quite feel like an embarrassing waste of a page.

Dream TV actually looks kind of awesome. If Nintendo Power says it's too easy, then it probably is, but a coop puzzle game with such a cool screen-splitting system certainly has potential. Too bad I never heard of it as a kid.

Yes of course they spin things, but usually they deceive by giving a general, vague sense that various mediocre games are exciting and deserve attention. They don't normally tell outright lies about specific details, or (as in this case) hide specific details that players would obviously want to know. They don't normally seem to be willing to stoop to such dirty tactics.
