What was the best year in video games, objectively speaking?

>> No.8355936

1987 and 1997 were pretty based though 1996 was a good year

>> No.8355938

1999. It had all that came before it, and none of what came after.

obviously
The question was not what year had the most great games released that specific year.

>> No.8355980

1997, 1998 and 2004 are highest tier, with 1996, 1999 and 2001 as second tier. For the record I turned 12 in 2000.

Peak nostalgia for me is early 2000s. Late 2000s were garbage.
I was 12 in 1997.

>> No.8356198

>12 in 2008
Outside of Obama winning I don't remember that as a particularly great year in life. 2002-2006, and 2016 were good ones.

As for gaming, what >>8355945 said.

I actually think pop culture was best when I was 5-6. Things had started to become pretty shit by the time I was 12.

Objectively? 2021, the year where the most video games were made and the most revenue was generated. That's the answer you wanted, right?

It's not about what releases in that year, its about the level of creativity, artistry, technical progression, along with important events and discoveries at the time that might have affected the films - or games whatever.

I usually say this too, but to play devil's advocate
>arcades are mostly dead
>LAN parties are mostly dead
The culture around the games has changed. Even if you try to recreate things, it won't be exactly the same experience. And as much as I argue against idea of games aging, there's something to be said about playing a game when it's new and everybody else is experiencing it for the first time. So you could make the argument things were better even though you can play all those games and more now.

While this is true, I have a feeling that the vast majority of players enjoyed games more in the 90's. Games were made for players. Half the people on this board are in it for nostalgia and the feel of touching plastic. Some of the others are in it to be part of the "retro gamer" clique, don't really enjoy the games, call any challenge bad design and tell themselves using savestates is not cheating because it makes up for the outdated design.

You didn't have that shit in 1998, and you could already emulate NES then.
