Starcraft Brood War has had a flood of custom maps made for it since it was released. Shortly after release, official tournaments were already being done using entirely fan-made maps. To this day, more tournaments have been done with fan-made maps than official blizzard maps. More than a few have become the most played maps in the game, including Fighting Spirit, Circuit Breakers, Python, Match Point, and Sylphid/Neo Sylphid. That doesn't even cover all the Use Map Settings special maps with unique gameplay like Random Tower Defense, or Poker.

It's fantastic, check it out. It can be a bit finicky on modern OS's like Windows 10 though. I had to download a slightly older version to be able to play in fullscreen without crashing, for example. Yes I think the community is still going strong because no games have ever come out to replace SWAT 4. The "tactical shooter" genre is mostly dead and SWAT 4 was rather unique even within that genre. The most popular mod is Elite Force. Adds a bunch of stuff and improves AI. There is a new one called First Responders but I'm not sure if it's out yet. I wish SWAT 3 got half as much attention since there are things I prefer about that game.

It's very different from basic Doom, because the shooting mechanics are much more like realistic shooters. Probably also has some of the most realistic and detailed wounding mechanics of the entire genre of first person shooters, in how wounds need to be properly managed, and injures stack up. Of course, it's still Doom as a setting, so there's ridiculous sci-fi stuff to keep you going, but even if you get fucked up beyond belief to the point medical science couldn't fix you, it's again, still Doom, so besides demons from hell, and hell itself, there's also magic, and the right kind of magic can fix just about anything. The wrong kind of magic can also ruin things.

What makes it stand out from other realistic shooters is that it's Doom, so you still have the abstract level design, you still have the aforementioned demons, and their vicious magic, so besides dudes with guns, there's reinterpretations of all the classic monstrosities to be truly merciless in their own ways.
The monsters don't play very fair, and given the nature of Doom levels being made for a very different kind of gameplay, some levels aren't necessarily realistically beatable, or they require unorthodox approaches, including breaching locked doors and barriers with explosives, shooting through walls, setting tripwire grenade traps, setting up different kinds of sentry guns, remote activating doors and switches, etc, so the player has all kinds of tricks on their own to use against the monsters.
With how item spawning is randomized, and you have an inventory to keep stuff in, Hideous Destructor also has a strong Roguelike element to it, you can ransack a random ammo box or backpack to find something you didn't know you wanted.

https://youtu.be/jNTX38yJK4o
It has a learning curve, and isn't for everyone, but it's also a very unique flavor. You can be very slow, methodical, and cautious in your approach, but often being fast, reckless, and hardboiled, can give you a the best results.

Vaporware. Even if it does come out, I'm not completely sold on the game itself. I doubt it actually be a "realistic," "tactical" shooter. In a recent video they showed the player pull a bullet out of his arm with pliers after a firefight. Some apologists on plebbit from the "NDA discord server" suggested it was a "placeholder" animation. Obviously that's bullshit. They probably ran out of money and are realizing that in order for the game to sell in large numbers, they will need to appeal to normies with bullshit like "healing" mechanics.

Gonna post some of the more popular modern SC:BW fan-made maps currently in use, as well as a quick rundown of the map. These are some of the most balanced and fair maps in the game, and far better than any of the stock maps blizzard made. Play on them, and you'll understand for yourself how much better they are.

Benzene by Str18-02
A 2-player map that has 10 additional base locations, 8 of which have gas. The natural secondary base for both players is overlooked by a ridge which can be accessed right into the main base by blowing up the NPC building in the way. The far edge of the main bases can be nailed by siege tanks sitting in the base over the unbuild-able ridges to the sides. The main is on high ground and behind a ramp making it very defensible, and the natural second has a narrow path leading out to funnel attackers. Along with bridges all over the place creating a lot of choke points, Benzene has seen a lot of very long and sneaky 1VS1 games over the years.

Circuit Breakers by Earthattack
A 4-player map that has 12 additional base locations, 8 of which have gas. Main bases are on high ground behind a single ramp, overlooking the natural secondary base locations, which have a single choke point connecting them to the rest of the map. Two side-by-side bridges and a wider elevated area connects each corner to the center area. Two fourth base locations bridge between third base locations, the other two are isolated between the secondary base locations. While somewhat asymmetrical, repeated use has shown the map to be almost perfectly balanced regardless of race or starting location. With the middle wide open, armies can dodge around the outer edge of the map or swarm through the middle, giving lots of strategy options. This and Fighting Spirit are the two most played maps in Tournaments and in 1vs1 and 2vs2 challenges online, as well as on the now defunct Fish server.

Eclipse by LatiAs
A 2-player map with 9 additional base locations, all with gas. Mostly symmetrical, the varied terrain and abundance of base locations make hidden base plays common. The usual second and third bases are easily defendable, but you could easily hide a base at either corner of the map as well. A relatively recent map, quickly became a tournament favorite due to how balanced it is.

Fighting Spirit by Rose.of.Dream
A 4-player map with 9 additional bases. Each player gets a secondary and third, and there's a double-sized area in the middle of the map. Each main base is on high ground behind a single ramp, and overlooks a small strip of land containing the natural secondary and path to the third. Each strip of land is connected to the center of the map by a medium width bridge. Each third base location is on high ground with a ramp connecting it to the strip of land and a ramp connecting it to the center of the map. Considered to be the most balanced map in the game for four players, where the combination of choke points and connecting paths allow quick retreats and advances to completely change the composition of a battle.

Gladiator by Str18-02
A 4-player map with 13 extra base locations, 9 of which have gas. In a reversal of the usual setup for multiplayer maps, main bases are on low ground behind a ramp leading up to the high ground secondary base. This has lead to a lot of rush plays where people try to contain their opponent in their main before they can establish themselves on the high ground. The pie slice shaped ridges around the map create a lot of low ground-high ground locations for combat, making positioning even more important than usual. Thin walls near the main also invite dropship and siege tank play. And in the center is a small double-gas base for anyone who survives into the late-game.

Neo Sylphid by LatiAs.
A 3-player map with 12 additional base locations, 9 of which have gas. Almost entirely flat except for 3 of the additional base locations, making main bases a bit more vulnerable than is normal. NPC zerg eggs sit at the entrance of each main to help provide a choke in the early game, while being clear-able so you can push your army through when you're ready. Noted as being one of the few well balanced 3 player maps, as well as the map that saw early game burrow used in a pro tournament with surprising effectiveness.

We should be friends. It's a great game.
I used to make levels for it all the time. Those are all lost to time now though.

There are still people archiving ZZT games and making new ones. Here's the one you were looking for: a uguu se / dxoQQhHJ ZZT (add in the dots).

It gave it to me automatically. I don't use uploaders often - the correct filename is "VADER.ZZT".

Theres an archive most of the user created content for this game. The old sites all died. I hope people were on top of archiving things for other games like Neverwinter. Most of the sites I used for Starcraft and Warcraft have all died off.

Only borderline retro, and I don't know much about single player content, but there's plenty of multiplayer maps.

I was a huge fan of Freerider 2. Similar to Linerider but you controlled the character. The one thing I wish it would have had is the ability to go through the backside of lines like in line rider. In line rider, you could make some nice looking handrails this way. In Freerider 2, you had to use the lighter decorative lines to fake the beginning of the handrail.

I ended up converting most of the 500-ish preserved levels to Aerofoil's format and bundled them together with the two e-zines from the 90s (requires mini vMac, also bundled) and an old level review page. https://www.mediafire.com/file/gjup9kkb8o7995d/Aerofoil_Houses.zip/file

Unfortunately, Aerofoil (and I think Glider PRO by extension) can only handle 48 levels at once, which is why I didn't include the program itself; it's on the itch.io page.

As Aerofoil already includes the "essential" levels, there's no point in this unless you're nostalgic for 90s Mac games or you're morbidly curious about what a South Park or "Death to Barney" themed level for a paper glider video game looks like. But maybe someone will find the archive for this thread in 2032 and i'll have helped them.
