The arcade game, hands down. I know a lot of people love the SNES fighters but they seem very limited and clunky compared to even other fighters at the time, and you're most likely going to be playing versus the AI anyway and it's incredibly easy to beat it so for me it got boring fast. You only got like 3 special moves too, iirc.

So for my money the arcade belt scroller is the best. The SNES versions come away with the same problem as the fighting games, just slow and simple compared to that.

Yeah. It was mostly guys, but there were definitely girls going to them after things got popular. Remember that Ms. Pac Man managed to get a good chunk of that started. Especially after the 80s, there was a lot of that empowerment going around with women in Japan. Part of why you see so many older sisters playing Famicom or PC games, or at arcades, in anime. The mangaka played at them of course, but she probably saw that what used to be maybe a 90/10 split was becoming more 70/30. Games are too fun to care about if it's proper, especially back when teens were way more fucking crazy rebellious.
Not really a surprise, though. Marketing always wants to expand player bases, and it felt like the future.

Economic strife, but also they didn't really stop, moreso just eased up on how bad it could get. The government just cracked down harder on it. Junko Furuta was in 1989, Otaku Killer same year. Sarin gas attack in 1995, all in the midst of the economic crisis. Bancho and whatever were moreso an older thing, and they weren't nearly in the same form by the time the 80s hit. Their legends still remained though, and everyone who grew up with that was old enough to put it to paper now.
Tradition is still strong, but there is a rebound of more rebellious teenagers and adults. It's just that they're not as violent or disruptive as before. Instead, it's more of a personal liberation from societal values and shame. While I was there on a business trip, my coworker and future wife invited me over to a Club Sega arcade and kicked my ass in Daytona USA 2. People don't give a shit.

The SNES JRPG supposedly got a much better retranslation patch like 2 years ago. The old fan translation was so bad it wasn't making any sense half of the time, it was made by people with 0 knowledge of the language before online dictionaries (or even Google Translate) were a thing.
https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3779078

But a bigger problem with the game is its balance. Almost every boss is a massive grind wall that will one shot you on your first try. I got as far as Crystal Tokyo and just couldn't be arsed anymore.

Otherwise... it's okay. The story/structure is obviously heavily inspired by Chrono Trigger with you having to time travel to various eras, which is kinda cool but each area is pretty shallow on its own. You get like a snowy area, a foresty area and so on, and they're all very stereotypical.

>2 lives, 8 long multi-part stages, no possible way to get more lives
>No special moves aside from a spin kick which drains health and is supposed to be your "I'm stuck card." but has slower start-up than a regular attack
>No dedicated grab button.
>Jumping is useless. Can be grabbed out of the air, and absolutely nothing can be jumped over. The one projectile in the game that can be, the enemy will just throw a second one for when you land.
>Being knocked down is death. Spam the bomb button all you want.
>Constant traps you have no chance of getting past if you haven't played the stage before. Bosses are even worse.
>1st boss: A duo boss that jumps around going invulnerable and dealing 1/3 your hp with randoms spawning. Honestly wouldn't even be bad if not for the fact you can't even tell if they're invincible or not. They'll jump turn into lightning and start walking around completely normal but you'll just go right through them if you try to attack. Then even when you're in the middle of comboing them they'll jump into the air onto your head and lightning you. This can't escaped unless you're already mid dash. Just try to jump. There's no pattern. They may lightning 5 times in a row, all while the timer counts down. Just hope they aren't at the start of their invincibility when you attack them, because there is no visual indicator.

Has insane amount of hp padding to the point the timer is more threatening then her even with her having a stun-lock instant kill.

4th Boss: GG. This is where the game ends. Quick Long range attack with invulnerable frames. There is no approaching him. Does a leaping attack that will instantly Zone into wherever you are. Distance, or Vertical layer does matter. No you can't jump up and attack him even if you somehow predict the randomnes. The only counter is the spin move from earlier. The one with the huge start-up, barely works, and damages you. If you try to damage him on wake up he goes invulnerable and does his leap attack again. Sense the spin move has long start up that means you lose half your hp. But he's perfectly fine to use his invulnerable move over your body. It's just save your bombs and have full health to spam spin the boss.
>Difficulty increases by increasingly increasing the health of enemies. But the timer stays the exact same, until it's the largest threat.
