I remember this being advertised in nintendo power, and to this day I still don't see the point. Under no realistic circumstance are you actually going to run out of storage space in your games anyway, especially 3rd gen where there's no cross-gen trading. I get that it's a niche item and expensive as a result, but I don't understand anyone genuinely wanting to pay hundreds of dollars for it nowdays.

The only somewhat rare video game I own is an unopened copy of the Metroid Prime trilogy for Wii. Not sure if Wii counts as retro or not. Had a few harder to find titles in my PS2 collection, but basically gave it away dirt cheap because I'm not a big believer in owning things that I don't use. I also gave away my CRT. In "modern retro", I have one of those NES minis. They're not that easy to find so I guess that's rare and I love it.

Honestly, I only bought it because I got an email from Nintendo's newsletter promoting the game, and how it was only going to be available at their NYC store (then the Pokemon Center) and webstore. My cousin had Ruby at the time, so I said "Eh, it's only $20 bucks, would be neat to check it out with them."
Sucks my big box got crushed under a laundry basket, and it'd be retarded to spend $500+ nowadays just to get that one piece replaced. Pic-related, in case anyone thinks I'm LARPing, I think it's even gotten a bit sunbleached.

I have a quite a few rare titles that I thankfully bought before prices went absurd. If the threads still alive when I get home Ill post pics. I have some really lucky finds. Got a Pal copy symphony of the night for like 80 aud way back when and now its 600. I also imported lsd dream emulator, at the time it was worth the price for the novelty but I cant imagine spending over 1000 for something so experimental and light on gameplay. I somehow managed to secure most of the holy grail mega drive games without spending a small fortune (snatcher, alien aoldier wily wars) and I bought soliel at a games market for like 70 and its sky rocketing now so thankful for that. I have my original soulsilver complete w the walker and all my og gba games complete too. Bought four swords on release as well. Metroid fusion is crazy expensive because now everybody wants to play through the story leading up to dread, still my favourite gba game. I think the only game ive properly spent meme money on is Panzer dragoon saga, I knew it wasnt to get any cheaper and my chances of happening across a copy was next to nil so make fun of me for that I deserve it honestly.

I really wish it wasn't a rare game. It's my all time favorite game from my childhood. It's absolute bullshit that the average people buying it aren't even Bomberman fans but just collectors looking to get a full N64 set. Die hard fans of the series have to cope with repro carts or flash carts. I also remember the game being glitchy when emulated so it was one of those you really needed to own physical, although these days I think emulators can play it.

I remember doing an internship over at Strijp-R, Eindhoven in the Netherlands and our boss told us how he found a shitload of documentation on Zelda and Mario somewhere in the building he rented. We just so happened to be stationed at the exact same facility where Philips used to brainstorm for those 4 games.
We got ourselves some copies of Hotel Mario laying around at the end of the run. It certainly isn't my rarest game, but it is the one with the best backstory attached to it.

The most expensive game I own is Popful Mail, but I think the *rarest* retro item I have is this Japanese Gran Turismo PS2. I haven’t looked it up in a while, but when I got it I couldn’t find any record of one being sold online anywhere so I have no idea what it’s worth. A quick google search shows one being offered for $1,000 right now, but who knows if that’s bullshit or not. I think I remember reading that it was only sold one day at some event, but that was from a forum post so again no actual idea.

I bought it for $20 from an antique furniture store in a small city in the midwest US. Not my photo but it does have the box and everything.

All PALshit because this is where I was born
>Tombi 1 & 2 (Although 2 is a rental copy)
>Klonoa 1, 2 and Beach Volleyball (Not sure if Beach Volleyball is rare but nobody seems to give a shit about it)
>JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Dreamcast)
>Pokemon Colosseum / Gale of Darkness
>MGS Twin Snakes
>Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 (Plus a few other PS2 SMTs but none of them are that expensive, barring Radiou which I sadly don't have)
>Yakuza 2 (Although I think this actually went down in price when the remake came out)
>A Mega CD (Who the fuck wants a PAL Mega CD, the only game of worth on it I have is Ecco and it looks like shit with an awful blue border)
>Pikachu Nintendo 64
>Neo Geo Pocket Colour with Sonic and Metal Slug 1 complete
I wouldn't say any of these are rare, but I think they're some of the more expensive things I have. I have a few sealed PS1 games but it's mainly shit people don't care about (Xena, Star Trek, Japanese Crash Bash).

Sorry man, but shit like GB Pokemon games are simply not rare, no matter how much newfags are willing to pay for them. And I say this as somebody who still has my childhood copies with boxes and manuals. Besides, I'm glad there are true rarities out there that bandwagonners don't know about yet, that way I can get them for cheaper. Even if you do deeply care about value, go for cheap rares - see arcade PCBs, which were relatively cheap up until probably 5 years ago, but once bandwagon hoppers realized that some are actually relatovely rare, certainly compared to regular retail games, prices spiked.

I remember getting that (complete!) from a guy who had a flea market games booth back in the '00s, His reaction when I got it was like it was a bad game, and I was stupid to want it. I just knew that my spidey sense was tingling that it felt like a rare game. I didn't even realize the Mega Man link at the time, but I know that's got to be why it's so expensive now.
>.hack
Got all seven, but the second series was a bit dicey because it was back in the day and I had to pay attention to not miss the last one. I probably never even unwrapped the last ones yet, barely finished the first game.
>chibi robo
I think when I got that was when someone paid to get a new print run of a few then-famously-rare games. No way to tell the difference because it was still an official print run.

My most interesting rare is probably TWO shrink-wrapped copies of Waterworld for Virtual Boy. It was already known as a rare title when the system was being clearanced, and I found two copies in a bin at TRU for six bucks each. Except somehow I only got rung up for one copy. I dunno, maybe I didn't notice a 2-for-1 deal or something.
