e2m2 is, by far, the best official map from Doom.
it does the best job of selling all of Doom's unique aesthetic and gameplay components in one package. It's exploratory, it's tense, the combat is fun and provides multiple options, there's a dungeon-crawling element while still remaining compact, it shows off the chaotic transition from a "grounded" base environment into Doom's unique interpretation of Hell, enemy placement is well-considered, etc. It's got it all, and yet it surprisingly coheres.
It have some nice exploratory nature, abstract semi-realism, little gimmicks and varied environments to keep the journey interesting, lots of free roaming enemies while the overall difficulty stays low, and you can choose whether to fight the monsters with conventional weapons or a berserk fist.
E2M2 is abstract in the way the best Doom levels are, but it has a fully realized sense of place. it actually feels like a functioning base of some kind of while also being an engaging experience that introduce strange elements into the mix - no small feat. the whole idea of a base overtaken by otherworldly and hellish elements is felt strongly the map - no ingame storytelling is needed. so many ideas are contained in what might initially seem to be a flat and boxy layout. it's like the level tells an entire story as you go through it (another thing you can feel very much in particular with episode 2 map 4 of Doom 1). it also feels labyrinthine but in a way that is exciting and interesting to unpack, and not as complicated as it might look. the fact that the crate maze is a central feature of the level but you can largely bypass it because the map points you to the critical path by the berserk pak is also really brilliant. i'm glad this map, and Tom Hall as a designer, is finally getting the love it deserves from the Doom community. i think E3M7 is almost as brilliant of a moody puzzle-style map with its own very distinct sense of place that i've still seen very few

Realm667 has a whole bunch. You could also look into the Alpha/Beta asset dump, there's lots of little treasures in there, including sprites for office chairs (a set of larger ones, which would probably look out of place, as well as a variant set which is scaled down and would look more appropriate).

If you're targeting vanilla, there's a number of unused Things and frames, though they are limited so you can only put in so many.
DSDA is Boom format, and also has its extended DeHacked format, letting you add as many objects, frames, and sounds, as you could possibly want, so that makes it much more flexible. Other ports don't support the extended DeHacked yet, so you're only looking at full compat with DSDA alone so far, but it's on its way, GzDoom has 'beta' support for it, for instance.

Then there's modern advanced ports with stuff like Decorate, ZScript, and whatever the hell Eternity uses, which lets you define as many actors, frames, sounds, and effects as you'd want, but unlike DeHacked and its extended variant, this language is actually sane and readable by a human being, on top of being capable of far more. Oh, and DDF, I guess, but nobody cares about 3DGE.
Downside here is that people are somewhat less likely to pay attention to Doom maps made for these ports alone.

it's not really the 640x480 being upscaled that bothered me enough to make this post but that very noticeable blur between pixels
especially noticeable on the hud if you open mspaint and bucket an area
here's this year-and-a-half old screenshot I found while I was searching for info

Why Switch would be a goid idea for mobile Quake? It can be run on a mobile phone/tablet without dealing with Switch walled garden. TyrQuake core in RetroArch can run OG levels, all addons and some newer maps (like czg07), but not Arcane Dimensions. Quad-touch can run anything. And you can use a proper controller instead of switch one. Additionally there is Raze-touch that is free and can run everything Build-engine.

I challenge you to complete Blood E1M2 on Lightly Broiled with a pitchfork start and no saves/deaths. It's actually really fun once you learn the route. Avoid/skip all the zombies at the start since you need to save all that ammo for cultists, go for the secret life seed, then the key, then the guns akimbo, doctor's bag, and armor secrets, then go for the partial invis secret and run for the exit. Clear all the remaining monsters after you collected the shotgun ammo in the final secret.

Though the dynamic music when it came to combat was the best thing about nuDoom. I have seen it done else where before but it was with slow and ambient music or progressive techno elements but wasn't for the entire game and usually just one part of a stage. NuDoom managed to get the dynamic music going much better and did it with shredding guitars as well and not ambient trance music or progressive trance elements that's tied to scripts within the stage.

There's a lot of mods out there with varying features/ideas. I just stick to the one I make for myself now and sometimes switch to playing other people's works. Hell some people have even used the gzdoom engine to recreate a silent hill type of game with full 3d models and everything. I've tried to fist fight at least everything once in HD. Tangling with Ninja Pirates is the biggest thrill, though scrapping with Revenants is also fun mode if they're willing to square up with you proper and not shoot you in the face with a fireball.

The supercharge secret was already fixed in the version I threw a handful of threads ago, but I went ahead and fixed the HoM effect in the backpack room. I'm not sure what was happening, it was made exactly like every other sky wall in the map. It might've had something to do with the sector for the overhang interacting with the sky wall in some way that made doom want to slit it's wrists.

Just got back from work and noticed that. Damnit. Unfortunately I tried messing with the zdbsp options and it wasn't working on my end. I eventually tweaked the offending puddle and both slimetrails were fixed on my end. I guess the node builders did not like the puddle's specific shape. Yeah, it perplexes me too, the new PrBoom/MBF family ports all seem to come with a really bad OPL emulation as its default option. It really would be way better if they had the generic Windows synth as default, it does the music way better justice.
Particularly since you can choose a soundfont in the options menu, but not an instrument set, so even if you pick FluidSynth you don't immediately get to hear what it can ACTUALLY sound like.

The first third or fourth of 2016 has ended up being my favorite part of both new Dooms on revisiting it, there’s some actual effort in nonlinear level design.

Finished Spear of Destiny and desu it didn't age that well. Mainly because of hitscan enemies. A lot of it is determined by random chance it seems, maybe an enemy will instakill you in one shot or maybe they'll miss or maybe it will only deal 10 damage. In Doom I feel like I can win if I just play better but in wolf there's only waiting for enemies in tight spots waiting for walk in and hope rng won't let them one shot you.

If you want to get rid of the blood splatter effect, you could plain replace the frames for it with empty transparent ones.

If you want to replace the gore in the death animations for the vanilla monsters, there does actually exist SOME graphics for that, animations being more like the monsters falling over or collapsing, without any blood, instead of rupturing open and spewing gore all over themselves. I don't know how complete that is though, I've seen set for a bunch of the monsters, but there's also many which I haven't.

As for custom monsters, unless whoever made the graphics for that monster also made goreless death frames (and this is almost never done by anyone), you're simply going to have to make those yourself.

Playing Zerstorer for the first time was an experience.

Get a running start towards the enemy, and punch just before you reach them. The hit doesn't land until your fist reaches the furthest point; if you get up close before attacking you're just putting yourself in the enemy's melee range.
