Never played the official, but the fan translation is good.

If you like it, the remake is actually pretty good and worth a play through too, unless local coop is the only reason you’re playing the original.

The remake is fucking AWFUL, it's worse than pic related. Squeenix has no fucking clue how to make a good game anymore. They openly sabotaged themselves when making FFX. Ys8 is another modern itteration of the Hydlide clone and murders the piss out of SK3 remake.

Play the original SFC version, with headphones set in Windows to surround mode (google how to do this). Then, in the game settings, change the audio to surround. This is such an amazing experience, and almost unique in gaming, with just a handful of JRPGs really fine-mixing for surround sound. The original Star Ocean is also comparable, possibly better.

The fan translation is your option if you want better hack compatibility. If you only intend to play vanilla, though, play the official translation instead. Surprisingly, it's much more accurate to the original Japanese, because the hack was hampered severely by space contraints while the localization had the advantage of Nintendo's source code. Yeah, there was a big kneejerk reaction to Charlotte's lisp, but she sort of had it in Japanese too even if it was more subdued. The only issue is that the text compression might look weird if you're usuing an outdated emulator.
Never played the 3D remake and don't intend to, it blew up my buddy's PS4 model.

This. The new and old both have much in their favor and some things against. I don't like the remake's supra linearity but I think it captures most of the best qualities of the original and is even quite beautiful visually.
I think it is idiotic to think that when there is two versions of the same game that one must be 'the bad one' the other 'the good one', and locked in as such for all time.
