Why does the Game Boy Color sound worse than the Game Boy? GBC games have beepier and cheaper-sounding audio.

P

>> No.8332880

I've noticed this too, even when it's plugged in to speakers or headphones, the original DMG has a fuller sound, with much more bass. I can only imagine they cheaped out

>> No.8333390

It doesn't have Dot Matrix with Stereo Sound

>> No.8333407

Can somebody prove this with a super gameboy/Gameboy player comparison?

>> No.8333463

Mind you I don't necessarily think it's endemic to the hardware. GB games played on a GBC sound okay, it's just GBC-exclusive games that feel like they have crappier sound.

It's like they're using a shittier audio driver.

couldn't notice any big difference between og and light (which should be identical to pocket).
but between og and color there is less punch in the color. not a world of difference but definitely there.

>> No.8334047

Anyone know any sound mods for the GBC that fix this?

I don't know, sounds pretty fucking good to me dog

we are talking about real hardware behavior, son.

why do you think chiptune fags exclusively use the dmg?

no reason lol

>> No.8334269

Another question:

How do you properly emulate the GBC bios changing an original GB games palette like you can on an actual GBC/GBA/GBP?

>> No.8334281

>>8334149
they dont also mod them to sound better its just because the dmg lasts forever also depending on what your doing LSDJ on the color might be better due to the added speed

its like the gba its known to sound like shit but thats because of lazy dev's you can make some bangers with a gba its all about the tools

>> No.8334413

>>8334269
?
You just use the correct bios, most emulators will correct the colours by default or a colour correction setting

Dumb question, but is the "monochrome" palette on a GBC for original Game Boy games a 1:1 match from that of a classic Game Boy/Pocket/Light system? Like are there shades of gray playing on a GBC that weren't there on the original?

>> No.8334789

>>8334562
none will look like the original gameboy or the light, the closest it can look is like the pocket

those are all the possible color palettes.
there are some more that apply automatically for specific games (kirby dream land and metroid ii being among them).

also don't forget everywhere white on these images are the colour of the screen

I mean does the bottom-right (B+Left) palette on a GBC match the palette of a Game Boy? I'm not talking the "pea soup" colors necessarily, but the actual raw palette from the GB games. (eg a cloud is gray on the Pocket, but black on the Color, etc) Just wondering if I can get away with just owning a GBC and not need a GB on top of it.

>> No.8335116

>>8335093
they are essentially the same as a gameboy pocket screen yes
there is no backlight on GBC

then the answer is no.
the pocket doesn't have the radioactive green tint of the gameboy og, but it isn't black and white either.
the reflective layer of the pocket still has a faint green tint.
that color palette is a good representation of what the pocket screen looks like.

as a side note, they always make the dmg green too dark, it misrepresents what you see in good light conditions.
that palette is more accurate.

I think part of the reason is because developers in the GBC era mostly decided to go for C64-style chiptunes because they figured it sounded more futuristic than the more traditional 8-bit music on the original GB.
