I don't share the visceral seething hatred for Treasure that /vr/ likes to display, but there's something about their stuff that just feels stressful and unappealing to play for me, just too hectic and visually crowded maybe.

Great game but the second half is way too hard thanks to typical US localization fuckery

I like the japanese version, has all the silly dialogue, no censorship and balanced difficulty. Now, as /vr/ tradition demands, we need the following:

#1 - Some anon posting the interview in which the devs tell how the american branch told them to spice up the difficulty for overseas release and they gladly did it.

#2 - Another anon replying "based".

make it 2. Treasure games are faux classics. they have excellent graphics with million enemies and fast action, and control pretty well with many abilities to choose from, so one may assume they're great. but one playthrough of Gunstar Heroes will make you realize just how dumb and dull the level design is.

I’m wondering what they did to the Australian release to make that one guy hate Treasure so much.

Pretty cool. Bit messy though.
Japanese version with the translated story is a must.

Australia-kun probably just didn't like Treasure, but saw some basedboy zoomers overhyping their games and then got mad. He thinks Treasure is widely beloved worldwide and only he knows the truth: that Treasure is actually... Trashure!

It's some CWC-level 'tism going there.

I've given this game so many chances.
But it's visually garish and ugly, the music is all the worse of lazy Genesis twank and farts and the gimmick wears thin after the first level.

The EN manual calls him "Bino" but I'm pretty sure it's full of shit, does anyone know what the JP manual says and if he's related to the "target" guy? I remember a blog back in the day that retranslated old Treasure stuff like Gunstar Heroes.

It's a 10/10 game. I prefer the SNES >>> Mega Drive/Genesis. However, after playing Dynamite Headdy, it instantly become one of my favourites. It is fun and hectic and is like a full on acid trip. Funnily enough, I was high when playing it for the first and couldn't believe what I was seeing. And no, I am not a stoner; I was on oxycodone and fentanyl after an appendectomy. Fucking great game, besides the pain.

I like it but it honestly feels like the Japanese version of games like Earthworm Jim 2 or Super Turrican 2 - visually stunning but so filled with gimmick stages, gameplay changes and set pieces that the core platforming itself falls pretty short.
Oh well, at least Headdy keeps the head changing gimmick and stuff for most of the game unlike EWJ2 where you get a multitude of weapons but can only properly use them in like three or four levels.

It is a very colorful game which changed my perception of the system. Which I knew was very limited in the colors onscreen and palette even back then. I was more used to the drab, muted look of Altered Beast, Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe, Ghouls n' Ghosts, and Strider and didn't realize it could create colors as vibrant as the NES could until Dynamite Headdy.

It is the severe weakness of the hardware which was its 64 onscreen of a choice of 512 colors. It was the primary reason I thought the Genesis was weaker than the TurboGrafx, NeoGeo, and SNES. It took a long while before developers were able to even choose more vibrant colors on the system to me.

Some of the localization changes are very impressive:

1. The toy robot boss looks cool and surprisingly extremely detailed for a localization edit.

2. Trouble Bruin is a fantastic name.

Other than those (and perhaps some of the name changes of other characters), the Japanese version is obviously better.
