I grew up playing the N64 and SNES for hours, my sister specifically uses me as an example that she "doesn't want" her son to repeat, but the funny thing is I turned out fine and I make more than both her and her husband. If your kids are retards and play a lot of vidya, then taking away the vidya is only going to make them unhappy retards who still won't accomplish anything.

That being said I would much rather my kids play video games than watch TV or Youtube. You at least need to use your brain, somewhat, to be good at games.

My mom originally had forbidden me from playing video games. I was a 4.0 student. Then she divorced my dad and let me play unlimited N64. Daddy got me a PC that I could play Half Life and Counter Strike on because showering me with gifts was the only type of parenting he knew how to do. I became a video game addict. Ruined my life. Your logic is that since you turned out fine, that everyone will turn out fine. Unlimited technology time for kids has been proven harmful to children so thoroughly in psychological research that its actually impossible to get institutional review boards to approve further research because the harms are so well known. Congrats on being a functional heroin addict but not every child should be given unlimited heroin.

You just have poor impulse control. Sooner or later you were going to fuck up your life. If you need adults older than you to coerce you, like an animal, to maintain your performance, then you'll fail eventually. Because at some point in your life, you're going to need to make decisions for yourself. You can teach discipline, but true self-discipline needs to come from within. Some people just aren't wired for it.

As for your story, I don't believe you went from 4.0 to a video game addict loser. I think you went from being a mediocre student to a total loser. If you did as well as you claim, it was only due to external pressures and not internal motivation.

I may have played video games for 2-3 hours a day, but I was also smart, and I was motivated to do well in school. If I needed to, I put down the video games to focus on studying. Even as a 6th-grade student I could understand this. Sorry you're such a slave to your impulses.

Your ideas on child psychology are completely opposite of what the literature overwhelmingly demonstrates. Children need structure. They need authoritarian or authoritative parenting styles for them to thrive. Permissive parenting has horrible outcomes, and everyone knows it. Children should have their electronics limited or they will become dopamine addict coombrains. It should be considered child neglect to allow your kids unlimited electronic time

Not that anon, but that response feels like it touched a nerve. I think they just mean that not everyone works in the same way. Nobody here is gonna be a boogeyman about games being bad for you, since it's just like any other kind of escapism, good and bad. Anon's point is (I think?) just that parents need to be able to at least limit the amount of time at least to start, since the younger you are, the harder the consequences for not paying attention are gonna be. Eventually, you loosen up those restrictions with age, but with self control, you want to at least instill some discipline before you let them make mistakes and learn from them.
If you're trying to imply that some kids are just wired to never get out of that self-control rut, then I encourage you to talk to a school counselor some day. While there will always be kids that fall through the cracks, you'd be amazed what some changes at home or tutoring can do to help. Only a big problem if it's a shitty family dynamic, or they have ADHD, and the latter has a ton of solutions nowadays that aren't even just meds. Even if this was some elaborate bait, I can't help but respond when it comes to thinking kids can be considered hopeless.
