ITT: Name your favourite classic Sonic the Hedgehog game and why.
I'll go first, with a basic pick: Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I feel like it's the best out of the main trilogy, and the spritework in it is beautiful. The final boss is epic too.

S3&K. I love the progression of the levels and the seeing the whole story from start to finish. I don't think there's any specific level I hate between S3 and S&K.
Sonic CD would be my second pick. I just find a lot of fun in the level design and exploring the levels, plus the great music both the US/PAL OSTs.

It's one of those games that require some acquired taste to enjoy, I suppose. The first time I played it back when the first PC version released, I kinda thought it was meh but now it's definitely in my top 3 Sonic games.

I don't have the patience for any of the sequel games anymore. I always start losing interest at the fourth zone. With Sonic 1, I'm in, out, and done before the fatigue hits.

Sonic 3&K. Most content, Big levels where you can pretty much choose if you want to speed through or carefully explore, the bonus games where you get elemental shields give you a good reason to collect and not lose your rings, 3 characters with one of them having a slightly different campaign, giving the game more replay value, Ultra Sonic is fun, I even enjoy the special stages.

I expected someone to answer this eventually, still a reasonable pick though to be honest

Sonic CD
Naoto Ooshima was the visionary indebted to Yuji Naka's engine, the hard-coding of assembly and momentum gameplay, that gave Sonic flair and image in pop culture. CD builds upon the very first game's momentum mechanics where you use said gameplay to navigate around it (i.e. robot generator in Collision Chaos past), along with the risk-reward factor of the super peel-out vs the primitive, slower spindash. This is a legit criticism as well, with the abstract-fuck weird worlds breaking the flow of the gameplay and satisfaction of traversing hazards and terrain rather than explore them, so understandably people don't like it. But it is because of the stylistic choices of the level design, their color palettes, and artistic direction; the choice to incorporate a (then-)edgy 90s techno/house/chill-out soundtrack; and the novelty of time travel and exploration gameplay that makes it overall a product of its time, where the 90s was eagerly awaiting globalization and the millenium, and a justification of how Sonic can adapt in any contemporary pop culture sphere, no matter how cringe (e.g. today).

I think S3&K is the overall best game but I find myself replaying S2 more often just because it's shorter and sweeter and easier to just pick-up-and-play

I love the idea of what they were going for with CD but just wish it were better executed. The primary goal of running to the goal runs counter to the exploration-based gameplay centered around jumping through time and smashing the machines. Both good ideas, but they don't work well together, and it feels like you have to choose one to the detriment of the other. I wish it were more like Sonic 3 where exploratory elements are more organically built into the level design without breaking the pacing.

Also the wonky spindash animation and the incorrect jump sound always just make it feel like a janky romhack to me.

Honestly it's a really tough choice. All of the games are really cool and they all have some aspect that makes them stand out against the others.
>Sonic 1 hits it home right out of the gate. Is short and fun to play through, and the "living pinball" concept is cool and interesting
>Sonic 2: Perfects the gameplay over the original and has some memorable stages and great music.
>Sonic3K: takes the notch and cranks it up to 100. Awesome music, fun these and just more content in general. Introduces Sonics rival who is just undeniably cool.
CD: it's not he beat but it has a lot going for it. The cutscenes are really cool and the time travel concept is interesting. Metal Sonic is a cool character and the anime featuring him was awesome as well.
>Chaotix: Very interesting concept and an interesting showcase of the upgraded hardware.
>3D Blast: interesting concept and gameplay. Very different from the rest of the series and probably shouldn't be included here but it's still fun to play. Check out the directors cut.

If I had to choose just one, I guess it would have to be 3K. I love the scene in the intro where you're running through the forest and you can see Eggman flying in the background behind the trees, and then he suddenly appears from behind the waterfall and attacks you. The music in those boss fights is super cool, and then we get to see more of Knuckles. The special stages are fun too.

Pic unrelated, I just think it’s funny.

I don’t really think it’s fair to compare Sonic 1 to S3&K, since they’re trying to achieve different things.
Sonic 1 is a nice, bite sized, arcade-like game, and 3&K feels like a grand adventure that you really gotta sit down and enjoy.

They’re both equal in my eyes, for different reasons.

I hate Sonic 2, tho. The clash with Japanese and American devs + the lack of Naoto Oshima really hurt that game’s potential.

S3&K is one of my favorite games of all time period. I used play it once everyday for a loooong time. GOAT game.
Cool act transitions and in-game cutscenes. Feels fluid. The Zones are a 'story' instead of a bunch of individual levels. Shields and insta-shields add variance and make playing through the game more fun and add more to the 'combat'. It also has GODLIKE soundtrack. The level design and concept is the best of all 4 games imo. The routing in that game is crazy. Pathing varies a lot between characters and shields. You get rewarded for your speed and strats. There isn't a single act I even slightly dislike playing through. And it rewards exploration to some degree via Giant Rings. Blue spheres is fun but I've played them way too long to enjoy them as much as I did. My only problem with the game is that you can't insta-shield when you can go super/hyper.

Second pick is sonic 1. I find it the most relaxing to play.

Sonic 2 is just a lesser S3&K. And none of the zones really vibe with me besides CPZ and MCZ which are stellar. Not a big fun of the special stages either, nor how you get in them, but at least they are not terrible. I just personally dislike them in comparison to others. Definitely a good game, it's just a miss with me, that's all. I feel so indifferent about it. I can see how someone might pick it over S3&K however.

I enjoyed having cleared CD in the end but it just fucking triggered me to actually play through it. The game feels like a cluster fuck of springs and bounces. The Zones feel like troll zones. I've only had real fun with SSZ. It does have the best special stages though imo, and the best music for them.
I really want to like playing the game, I do, but I feel like it's actively trying to resist me doing so. While CD is objectively a better game than the Master System Sonic games, I've had more fun playing through those instead of CD.

I've only played the original versions of these games not the widescreen 60 FPS ports.

Stages can be good while still having ass mechanics. Aquatic Ruin is a prime example of how do to water RIGHT in a Sonic game.

I mostly mean levels that are 100% centered around water, like Labyrinth Zone from Sonic 1

Sonic 2, though I acknowledge Sonic 3 and Knuckles being technically better.

Why did Sega scrap Naoto Oshimas timeless designs, which were half the reason Sonic became a success to begin with? How can anyone look at Modern Sonic and think it's a superior design? Besides zoomers who have nostalgia for the Adventure games because it introduced them to Sonic. Even as a kid I accepted the redesigns but felt it was a downgrade. I hate Sega so much.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is mine, mostly through Sonic 3 Complete. I've played that game through more then any game in existence.
I just love everything about it. The only ways I can really play 1 or 2 anymore is either through Sonic Classic Heroes or the Android decomps.

Sonic CD. It tries to avoid the issue of Sonic bossfights being filler by making each fight unique and, while easy, fun, and unlike S3&K, I can easily memorize the overall layout of each stage. In CD, I still remember where all the secrets are, including the hidden statue in Wacky Workbench, and know how to get to them, while in 3&K, even if it is a good game, levels like Marble Garden are a mess and barely have any landmarks or interesting moments.

2nd favorite would be Sonic 2 Game Gear, because it's probably the most challenging of them all, being more in-line with the platformers of the time while most other classic games feel like they belong in the 2010s with how forgiving they can sometimes be.

Sonic 1 as it was the only one I owned/played back in the day. Plus it still has the best aesthetic.
