This is still the best arcade racing game. I knew it the day it came out it was one of the best games ever, and it was underrated from the start. It's grown in apprentice, but not where it should be. The control is perfect, and the graphics are still amazing.

Fuck yea. I made a thread about Wave Race 64 a couple weeks back when I discovered it for the first time, I’m obsessed with it. Few other racing games can run at 20fps and still feel so fast and good to control.

I’m still trying to beat the expert mode - it’s killing me. Got Blue Storm too and it’s not bad, has an early-2000s charm to it, but the controls are too different from 64’s for me to really love it. I know I’ll be coming back to 64 for the rest of my life - it’s one of those games that just absolutely absorbed me and made an indelible mark. The music! Those sun-bleached summer vibes that seem to only live in mid-90s Nintendo games, some sort of magic that is perfectly embodied by early 3D graphics and shiny SGI renders. It just straight up rules, can’t get enough of it.

Yep. I was so stoked for Blue Storm on Gamecube. I didn't know they were going to fuck it up so bad. The control is just so bad. If they fixed that it would have been better, maybe. It did have silky smooth framrate, higher res and four players, but the original had better stormy weather and waves, I think...

Even hydro thunder is better than WR64

>> No.8315197

>>8314964
I like hydro thunder but the racing lines feel alot more restrictive. I also think wr have more varied music and just feels alot comfier. But I've only played the Dreamcast hydro thunder so maybe things are somewhat different and maybe the jumping controls are alot better in the n64 port too?

Yeah I'm still mad how they fucked up the game with the sequel, at least 1080s wasn't so bad

But even all that here is my watercraft racer rankings
1.Wave race 64
2. Hydro thunder on dreamcast
3. Jet moto 2
After that they are all kinda too janky but H20 overdrive is a good spiritual successor to hydro thunder

What went so wrong?

>> No.8317457

>>8317430
Outsourcing to western developers. Strange because the game team did a good job of recreating Ridge Racer's gameplay in RR64. Clearly they were given more freedom with this game and 1080's sequel and that was a mistake.

>> No.8317486

The control. In WR64 you could pivot down left or right on the control stick along with the shoulder buttons to turn fast. They took that away in BS.

>> No.8317494

>>8317457
RR64 sucks big time. Of course nintendrones who are't familiar with Ridge Racer series would claim otherwise, but once it's their precious Wave Race that gets westernized, they cry "look how they massacred my boy" about it.

it’s really not a bad game - but compared to the original, the controls are wildly different. you can certainly get used to them and get good, but it’s nowhere near as enjoyable if you love the control of the original.

It's a 2000 game that plays comparably to a 1995 game (Ridge Racer Revolution) but lacks trademark Namco art direction and soundtrack - RR64 is has a very uninspired, knock off look which is further aggravated by toy-like car model proportions. Furthermore, Ridge Racer V was released around the same time.
