Do you prefer SNK or Capcom's character designs?

>> No.8313924

not gonna play fanboy here, but SNK all the way. capcom started from martial arts stereotypes in sf2 and continued with some genetic freaks in sf3. sure, they made some cool chars here and there, but for each cool one they made oro or rufus or dhalsim.
snk started from martial arts too, but they also made iconic characters that broke the mold like Terry Bogard, then went into 90s anime / visual kei fashion with Iori, then nailed it with K' and Angel. they have a different vibe, but their characters in general are made to be "cool", not some shit assed freaks that only Yoshinori Ono likes. and when Capcom does make something cool (eg Yun), it feels more like SNK than Capcom.

>> No.8313936

>>8313924
also to add. sometimes designs alone might not carry snk chars all the way. but they make up for it 200% with personalities. see: Yuri or Takuma. Capcom rarely if ever reaches same heights (Karin, Makoto), and when they do they fuck it all up in the next game.

>>8313924
I disagree. SNK has more uninteresting characters imo. Most of the fatal fury cast apart from well known ones are so boring. Tung Fu Roe, Raiden, Bob wilson are so forgettable. Kof isn't immune either, I find Vice, Mature, King and so many others just so meh and lame. Capcom definitely has meh characters, but I always felt less so.

>> No.8313981

>>8313951
well first off, it depends on person. i can't start telling you how many fans vice and king have. i'm dead serious, they're best girls for like 50% snk fans out there, along with leona.
second, you picked very bad examples. both companies have ups and downs. every company FG series does. so let's not forget that Tung Fu Rue and Raiden were very late guests to KoF. Bob wilson hasn't even been to KoF at all. Vice and Mature started out as basically quick 1-off characters meant to be killed by iori. i'm not implying they are great or anything. but for every one of those, there will be Billy, Geese, Kim, Yamazaki, Rock, Vanessa, Yashiro, etc.

I think it might be that Capcom's characters tend to be more stylized and thats why i like them more but I've always felt that SNK had a sea of lamers with a few exceptions, but Capcom was the opposite. I fucking love the entire SF3 cast, Q and Oro are based af, and the entire Darkstalkers and Red Earth cast have so much personality.

I think that might be why, i never liked these types of characters that much. But i do agree with you that characters like Rufus and Dhalsim are so lame lmfao. I think El Fuerte is capcom's shittiest design lol

Fatal Fury > Street Fighter = KOF originals, that's my taste.

I think FF designs were all kino and got right both "cool" street clothes characters as well as martial arts designs. KOF originals were too much made to please female fans it seems, and SF (aside from Alpha) always has a really ugly cartoonish look to it where everyone looks like some frankenstein monster

King of Fighters has better designs then Street Fighter, Last Blade has better designs then either of those, and Darkstalkers has the best designs in the entire genre.
>>8314163
FF has some great characters but the boss characters of FF2 always annoyed me since they felt so clearly "inspired" by SFII's bosses. Geese, Krauser, and Yamazaki are amazing characters but I don't think I've ever heard of a Laurence or Axel fan. I'm probably in the minority but I think Art of Fighting's cast is more likable then Fatal Fury's in all honesty.

>> No.8314293

>>8314087
I don't think too hard about it. SNK has cooler characters from a design standpoint and in motion to me. Outside of Darkstalkers, Devilotte, and the MvC2 originals, Capcom's FG characters don't leave much of an impression on me.

>> No.8314304

SNK can be faulted for leaning too much into realism with martial arts getups and denims for days, but Capcom designs consistently look like budget 80's anime rejects and should be killed with fire.

Hard to compare. If we are going Street Fighter vs Fatal Fury/KoF, Capcom has a more comic book, cartoon, 90s anime style for pretty much all of their stuff, while SNK is more grounded and gritty or sort of in the case of FF, like an 80s action movie vibe. Just compare Capcom vs SNK to SNK vs Capcom alone and you can feel the major differences. I enjoy the Capcom style more for the non-fighting stuff they do, besides Darkstalkers and Red Earth, while I like SNK fighters much more, especially the style of Fatal Fury. FF feels more like a true "street fighting" game then anything Capcom ever released.

>> No.8314560

>>8313887
Capcom as whole vs SNK as a whole probably Capcom, but Capcom fighting cast vs SNK fighting cast probably SNK.

I think Capcom's fighters are more well-rounded though, the entire SFII cast is iconic. I feel like most of SNK's standouts are from older SNK franchises like Fatal Fury or SamSho rather than KoF, I don't care about the design of some popular KoF characters like Iori, K', Ash, Sylvie all that much, and I consider characters like Bao, Chris or Meitenkun to be straight up bad. I really like Vanessa and Leona though, Kyo often looks good too.

>> No.8315140

SNK's by far but I did like Capcom's renditions of SNK's designs. CVS2 is a better game than anything SNK made.

Not to disagree too much but Terry didn't break a mold, he's just from a less common one, the American action hero archetype. I suppose, you are right in the sense that he does not have a specific martial art tied to his design but you look at him and instantly know he's a tough Roadhouse-esque fighting dude.

SNK designs are basically joint coomer/cosplay bait, refined and optimized to the max; they know their audience and fully exploit it.

look at Darkstalkers female cast and tell me Capcom didn't do the same. SF too, with Sakura and Cammy. even Rival Schools is guilty of it, and in general the latter was way closer to anime designs and snk style.

The coomer angle is there for sure, but that's almost a logistical necessity in any female game character (or used to be at least). Still, their designs go beyond stock anime characters with cute clothes on, which describes the entire SNK stable both female AND male except for the early Samurai Shodown games maybe.

SNK fighter designs tend to be more interesting (as fashion, etc.), but by the mid-90s Capcom had the better artists, art direction, and animators, I feel. Shinkiro's figures -- and he was the face of most SNK fighters -- tended to be very rigid and lacking in dynamism, and his treatment of surfaces, over-airbrushed for my tastes.

tl;dr -- SNK characters illustrated by Capcom artists: Perfection.

I feel this as well. By 1994 Capcom had Xmen: COTA and Darkstalkers, while SNK had KOF 94 and AOF2. You be the judge on which games look nicer.

SNK hands down.

Capcom has a tenth of the FG characters and still loses even in proportion of good vs lame. Some Cap games have superior animation and move sets, but they still come off feeling generic.

SNK chars mostly feel more unique, giving games more variety.
