Hello, /vr/. I am NOT the organizer for /v/'s latest Super Mario World collab hack. In the previous thread, we got a NEW BASEROM with the Cancer Lord fight finished and several bugfixes and level adjustments; the organizer is working on the cutscenes and Adventure's End port for the Mecha Sneedzoid boss, as well as a reworked puzzle for Bender's Big Score. The hack is close to completion, so you can use this thread to document things about the current build or discuss the few works in progress we need to finish up (like the Matador fight for CONCEPTION and the cover art).

There are two active testing documents:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qE7rOQxkSmKv2FRFwByp445oOz0sRxgEsWk_I9z1IQo/edit

Someone also dropped this port of Southern Cross, which is meant for the last level, but let's just say it needs some serious reworking to sound acceptable. I'll leave it here for anyone brave enough to do so.

Thanks. Admittedly, although I have a lot of enthusiasm, I've seldom touched music before this. Unfortunately, unless the notes are clearly broken, the most I can do to improve them is change the octaves since trial-and-error-ing is very difficult. I've tried emulating SMW's vanilla songs, to at least keep the novelty of having this song be rehearsed in a SMW soundfont. The only way to improve this song now would be to learn ADSR, but learning the ins and outs of SPC700 for a single song would be pretty futile. I'm hoping a real musicfriend will find some use of what I did so far.

By the way, have you heard the source MIDI? There's only 2 pianos in there. Someone will have to compose everything else. At least I got some percussion in. Should have tried doing a complete midi like Feldschlacht instead.

Dude, you can take that knowledge and keep on polishing and perfecting your technique, and THEN you can make ports and original compos, upload them to youtube and eventually start making some pocket change if things go well (or even more if you decide to paywall your shit)

>> No.8313560

>>8313354
ADSR isn't some magical technique, it's literally just how the volume (let's call it that for simplicity's sake) will behave each note for the instruments. It also won't do much if anything at all to "one-shot" (also known as non-looping) instruments like the Piano

>> No.8313838

>>8313560
Every modern unsampled SMW custom song nowadays seems to modify the normal instruments to the point they resemble something all new. You must learn stuff like this if you want to make a noteworthy port nowadays. Shoulda known this is way out of my league, not to mention I don't plan on making SMW hacks after this is over.

Is there a way to make a midi file and then convert it into a song that can be used in a hack without it sounding like shit? I always wanted to know because I have no fucking idea how to make a song using the music tutorial thread.

You can covert a midi to get the notes right with something like PetiteMM, provided that the midi has no more than 8 channels and only one voice per channel, but everything else, from tempo to volume to instruments, you will have to define from scratch for smw.

I see. I'll have to look at that then. I don't think I will start porting songs anytime soon, but I'd like to know where to start.

It's been a while, but when I played it, some levels were extremely obvious that they were made by westerners, especially SMWC people. They had all the shit that was popular at the time over there. Plus, some of them played like those Rube Goldberg machines. Not to mention that they also majorly used music from SMWC instead.

As to how they did it, some knew Japanese (more or less), others used translators, and others didn't even say a word, they just posted stuff directly. Again, it's been a while so my memory might be a little fuzzy, but that's what I remember seeing myself.

I definitely am, and I don't mean to tug on anyone's shirt sleeve. naturally, shit like Candy Château's broken exit and Round Two being unfinished take priority over polishing bosses (though I noticed that the Mini fight was changed a little, and I approve).

>>8319971
1. I want to differentiate his sprite from common enemies. it seems someone already did that by creating a starry cloak (you could also make it purple or crimson, but those are just ideas).
the two other changes are more technical:
2. he needs a condition added so that he can only spawn when there's two empty tiles above a surface. currently, he can spawn on top of blocks, which disrupts his shots.
3. there should be another increment of difficulty added, so that at 2/5 hits, he reflects the shell slowly and shoots at 2x speed, then at 3/5 hits, fast reflect/shots come in. currently he goes from 0 to 100 too quickly, and it's slightly jarring. for the shell reflect, you'd have to invert the responses for 2/5, apparently it responds to normal shells with fast, and (in theory) a fast shell with normal speed. if you can't flip the shell reflect, then I'd settle for starting fast shell reflect at 3/5, with only the 2x shot speed at 2/5. maybe that's more realistic?

as I said, I'd do this shit myself if I had any inkling of how to do it. at most, I could cook up my own sprites, but that's all.

The problem with VIP6 was that unlike /v/3 we never really saw what the boss was and what its attacks were gonna be, if there was even a boss planned in the first place. The thing with the /v/orld projects is that OP has decided what the final bosses are gonna be from day 1 of the hack which is a very good thing because that way you can plan ahead what its attacks are gonna be along with the song. It just needs to be made, that's all. He already showed us a demo of Sneedlord a while ago and even if it wasn't much; it at least showed us what the boss arena was gonna be and what the fight is centered about.

We also don't have to worry about gaijin faggots trying to add dumb shit into the hack like what SMWC people were doing with VIP6. I wouldn't be surprised if a decent portion from that site has at least made something just for this hack but its more fun if remains anonymous. I will never join a Discord server just for this.

so what? a moderator on 4chan is a gigantic faggot? big surprise there
obviously you, as well as the mod who made those posts, have no idea what the actual purpose of a tripcode is
it's to identify yourself... dot dot dot. for a single thread. but nobody uses it for that purpose, they use it because they wanna have some cult of personality faggotry on an anonymous imageboard
at risk of sounding like a japanophile: the core intention of the tripcode, such as the 'sage' feature, has been entirely lost on western audiences
tripcodes were meant to identify yourself in one thread only, when needed, so people couldn't claim to be you when you are making multiple posts about something of relative importance
similarly, the 'sage' feature was originally intended as an act of politeness, not a reddit-style downvote. you were supposed to use it when you posted in a thread, but thought that you didn't actually contribute anything of value, so it was polite to not have that thread be bumped back to the top without (user discretioned) reason
tl;dr: fag fag shut up fag lurk moar

The Southern Cross MIDI is done. Not sure how to deal with the changing tempos and note lengths, so I had to get a little creative at some parts. You'll know what I mean. I hope this proves useful somehow.
https://files.catbox.moe/h3sfoi.zip
https://voca.ro/1leuZYY2tYX5

Fun fact: this is actually two MIDIs and recordings stitched together. I ran out of space while making it, so I had to split it into two and then copypaste the second part onto the MIDI file. Adventure's End also took up all the space, but I didn't have to use multiple files.

this is a really good MIDI for this purpose, i was expecting something mediocre but it was actually great.

however, there are some parts that are glaringly out of tune, or rather, they have the wrong notes:
0:00 - the entire beginning piano section is entirely fucked, i don't know what in the name of god you were doing here
0:30 - the "holy light" part is quite incorrect (i don't know music notation, and i really can't tell you how to fix it, just listen to the song again lol)
0:32 - this may be an artistic liberty, but "crusaders" has an extra 'syllable' (or two?) than it should
1:01 - like the beginning section, the timings for the notes is all fucked up here. if it's 'impossible' for the timing to be what it should, then the notes are probably triplets (god help you if you don't know what this means)
1:20 & 1:22 - (repeat of 0:30 & 0:32)
1:53 & 1:58 - pitch of piano gets minorly fucked here, i don't believe it should go that low (but what the fuck do i know? just look at another midi or something)
2:13 - AAAAAAAHHHHHHH (repeat of 0:00)

anyways, these are just the MAJOR flaws that need to be addressed. the rest is great, there are other problems of course, but they are minor and quite low priority, so don't worry about minute bullshit

>SMW doesn't like having multiple short notes playing after each other (it sounds choppy as all hell)
this is not super mario world's problem. the SPC700 (SNES audio processor) has a short delay between the notes it plays.
it is just much more noticeable when the notes are very short, because the delay is a bigger proportion of time compared to the note length

>> No.8341530

>>8341501
No, it is SMW's problem. Other game engines have ways to deal with this problem, either by forcing a fade during key off (AMK kinda has this, but it only applies to key off caused by rests and the q command, not the note's natural key off) or by removing the staccato entirely.

1:05 (previously 1:01) is fixed now, but why is it so slow compared to the rest of the song? it's like the tempo suddenly got lowered or something
if you did it to fix timing issues, you can just raise the tempo temporarily for that section, then change it back

I had nothing else to do right now so I decided to make a text file with all the custom songs playing in which levels. I've omitted the SMW songs because that would be too much of a pain in the ass to add. Hopefully someone like OP can use this.

https://anonfiles com/f7dci9Wcu7/songs_txt

I've also found out that sublevel FA (a screen from Kusoge Course) is not used in the actual level itself, so I feel like OP accidentally gave the wrong level number to one of the pipes in the first screen.

It's pretty slow. Organizer is working on the Sneedzoid boss, and someone is presumably working on a proper Southern Cross port. I think the other big things left to do now that most of the major issues have been fixed are the boss rush and the bonus characters.

I don't think anyone is working on that port at the moment.

Even now, I'm still working on things, which I'm hoping will show up in the next baserom. Been playtesting a bit too.

Random question, but does anyone know what causes mario to lose power-ups whenever this ASM is on? Is it possible to turn it off?

I'm gonna do a little mild liveblogging of my current replay of SM/v/1 and 2.
I just played Liquid Sneak through NOT ULTRA STAR in a 3 hour sitting. I have gotten a lot better at SMW in the past two years, which surprised me. Several of these levels took me hours to beat on my first run (particularly Football Manager and Superbowl Switch Palace which both made me go insane).
Doing 4 crazy intense levels back to back and then cooling off with an atmospheric level like Beep Block City is a great feeling. This hack is really fun. I can't wait to revisit /v/2 too since I remember it being even better.

I agree. I replayed it with the remastered version and it's still very fun. It's more straightforward and vanilla-flavored, and it was certainly a necessary step to get to where we are now. You can tell that the more sophisticated level designs of the sequels is based on the experience gained from the original and whatever other hacks the authors worked on in the meantime. I wonder what happened to /v/ Makes a Shitty Romhack. I can't find the wiki.

I remember back around 2017 or so /vr/ tried to make a SMW hack but then it just kinda stopped for whatever reason. I was gonna make a level for it but I didn't see any proper progress get posted. I do remember that it had the gif of the LM editor from FuSoYa's site as OP's image when that thread got made.

Apparently there was another thread made later that period and some levels were used in /v/1 while other levels got cut even if there was effort put into them. I saw there were a few builds from that time period on smwdb as well so maybe those cut levels can be used in /v/4 if that ever gets made.

IIRC some of those /vr/ levels got used in /v/orld 1 to pad it out.

I'm surprised that the /v/2 levels don't filter me as much as it did a few months ago. Yet I get filtered by the /v/3 levels. Maybe /v/3 did end up being harder after all.
